Fourth Anniversary! | Patreon Weekly #205
Added 2023-05-08 19:22:07 +0000 UTCHey Patrons, this week is the Patreon’s 4th anniversary! I’ve also got a bit of info to share about shop interfaces.
Four Years!
And just like that, somehow it’s been four years since this Patreon started (as of May 12th)! It’s a bit crazy to think that people who were just joining around the time when loyalty rewards were being voted on are now almost ready to receive their three year pins.
Last year I did a little retrospective on the game’s main menu, so this time I thought it would be fun to go over the history of Shattered’s icon! It’s actually gone through a surprising number of revisions over the years:

- v0.1.0: This is just Vanilla Pixel Dungeon’s icon with no changes, and was only Shattered’s icon for a single, initial release.
- v0.1.1: Shattered needed a unique icon due to emerging policies on the Pixel Dungeon Subreddit about mods, so for the time being I went with a simple green color filter over Vanilla’s icon.
- v0.2.0: Very similar to the previous icon, I upped the overall contrast a bit to make the icon ‘pop’ a bit more for Shattered’s release on Google Play.
- v0.3.0: To go along with Shattered’s second major update, I overhauled the icon to be a much higher-effort recolor of the chest from the game’s main menu. While details have changed this is the overall design that has stuck throughout the years.
- v0.5.0: I dropped the pixelated shadow in favor of a more high-detail one, making the icon fit with other app icons a bit better.
- v0.7.2: A background was added along with adaptive icon support for newer Android versions! The chest shrunk to follow Google’s guidelines for adaptive icons. Older Android devices without adaptive icon support would keep the v0.5.0 icon until everything was standardized in v1.1.0
- v1.0.0: To go along with the iOS release I made some final changes to the icon, reverting the chest size (Google recommendations be damned), making it symmetrical, and brightening the golden trim to be a bit more brilliant. Desktop and all Android versions would get this icon a touch later when v1.1.0 was released.
Shop Interfaces
I’ll share a bit more v2.1.0 info next week, but there is one significant change that I can show off! When interacting with shopkeepers, a little interface will now appear:

In addition to the usual sell items feature, you can now have a tiny chat with the shopkeeper, or buyback up to the three most recent items you sold! Shopkeepers will remember the last 3 items you sold to them indefinitely, although anything after that is lost. There is no penalty for buyback, other than having to return your gold.
The extra chat option is pretty minimal at the moment, largely being a reference to the old signposts that used to be in front of shops in Vanilla, but there’s plenty of opportunity to expand this in the future.

Comments
It's not planned for v2.1.0 in particular but I do want to eventually overhaul the existing shopkeepers, and this is an initial step toward that.

You could add in new, unique shopkeepers with unique mechanics (perhaps one has more potions, another more scrolls) and some cool dialogue that matches them!

Small lore bits are what I love the most to see, so I'm excited for expansions of different possible dialogue options based on class choice! This also leaves room open for maybe a mini-quest. The shopkeep could say "if you find a I can pay you a bit more for it or give you etc.
