Duelist Subclasses | Patreon Poll #36
Added 2022-12-05 18:31:16 +0000 UTCHey Patrons!
Work on the Duelist is well underway, and with both subclasses roughly defined, there’s the obvious question of which one I should implement first! I will likely start the alpha/beta for v2.0.0 before the Duelist is content-complete, so the result of this poll will likely decide which subclass everyone gets to play with first!
The winning choice will be the first Duelist subclass that I implement!

Please vote for all the options that you like, not just for your one favourite! I allow multiple votes as it means that a higher proportion of people will end up voting for the winning choice.
All patrons are encouraged to share their opinion by commenting and voting, but currently only the votes from Golden+ Supporters are counted when determining a poll winner. Votes from Shattered Supporters are worth double!
Champion
The Champion subclass directly enhances weapon abilities, by letting the Duelist equip two weapons at once. This subclass will let the Duelist freely switch the weapon she is attacking with and use either weapon’s ability whenever she wants. Both weapons will have their own charge meters as well, though the secondary weapon will likely be a bit more limited than the primary. If one of her equipped weapons is higher level and the same or higher tier, it will also share its upgrade level with the weaker weapon!
I want the Champion to really lean into letting the player experiment with weapon abilities, and mix/match to find interesting combos. The upgrade sharing also opens up a lot of tactical flexibility.
Master
The Master second subclass focuses on physical technique and martial arts. This subclass will build up power during combat, which can then be spent on a number of abilities, mainly focused around utility and defense. The class might end up playing like a more relaxed and utility-focused version of the Gladiator, where points are easier to build and maintain but are less useful for outright killing enemies.
I want these abilities to augment gameplay focused around weapon abilities, wands, or similar. Here are a few WIP example abilities:
- A short ranged ‘dash’ move that’s great for quickly repositioning just a few tiles
- A ‘focus’ move that behaves very similarly to focus on monks.
- A more expensive ‘meditate’ move that lets the Master convert their power into health, and possibly wand/artifact charge
- A more expensive ‘dragon kick’ move that knocks back and stuns enemies
Comments
Indeed, that would be fun.

2022-12-05 19:36:07 +0000 UTCSome of this will shake out in implementation, but the basic idea is that the 'action' button (which is used by other subclasses) will be used to swap weapons. Probably it won't matter if either weapon is cursed, as you're technically not equipped or unequipped them.

2022-12-05 19:30:32 +0000 UTCHow exactly will swapping a primary and secondary weapon work? Will there be a new button in the interface or will it be only possible from inventory. And what happens if one of the weapons is cursed?
