New Music! | Patreon Weekly #83

Hey Patrons, Happy New Year!

As you can probably guess from the title, I’m working with a composer to overhaul and expand Shattered’s music! I have two WIP tracks for you to take a listen to:

You can find a video of the main game theme here: https://youtu.be/aKrX9CA0Szw

And a video of sewers gameplay here: https://youtu.be/10P4xCm1a2M

There are also direct downloads for both of these tracks attached to this post.

New Music!

Seriously, go listen to those tracks if you haven’t already! The main theme track is a pretty faithful recreation, whereas the sewers track takes some of the existing motifs and does something new with them. We’re also trying to use a mix of synthetic and instrumental sounds, so the tracks both match the game’s style and sound suitable epic.

Aside from just replacing the existing game music, we also want to add more! The current plan is a track for each region, plus at least one boss track. We are also strongly considering doing extended versions of many tracks for platforms that have more storage space, such as desktop computers.

Storage space is unfortunately limited for some Android users, which forces the tracks there to be a bit short, but we’re still using some tricks to make things sound less repetitive. The sewers track has a 30 second intro and a 1 minute main section, but they’re shuffled around in the video to give the impression of a longer track.

I don’t yet have a specific plan for when these tracks will be polished up and put ingame, but at the moment things are progressing well! This is a pretty significant change to the game, so you’re feedback is invaluable, please let us know what you think!

A few Other Bits of Info

So, with that big announcement out of the way, here are a few other bits of news I want to share:

I think that's reasonable! Two tacks is enough for bosses!

Newt the Newt

these new tracks are amazing! i rarely play with the game music on, but that may change once these are implemented. i do think it'll take some time to get used to these though, and of course i will absolutely miss the lovely echoic instrumentation of the main theme and the nostalgic feel from the old level theme. although cube_code's current music is great, my excitement for new and revamped tracks is through the roof!

Lassoloc

I totally get that. Either way, I'm excited for what's to come!

This is something the composer and I have talked about, but it's not really feasible due to storage limitations. If we make extended tracks this might be feasible, or I could look into adding some ambient sounds to the SFX system.

Shattered Pixel

Unfortunately that would be tricky to do given storage limitations, plus if each region had its own track, there would need to be a ridiculous number of region+feeling combos. Something like this might be better served by ambient environment sfx, though there aren't any plans for that atm.

Shattered Pixel

I agree, however storage limitations may make that tricky. We haven't locked things in yet but the most likely outcome atm is a regular boss track plus a final boss track.

cool! for the sewer music, how about combining the motifs with more of the environmental ambience? (water drips, sounds of insects crawling around, echo) - might be worth to make the soundtrack quiet long and not too repeating, considering it will be played for 4 levels. just some suggestions :)

Bastian

New tracks are awesome! Looking forward to the rest. : )

brodes

Really enjoying the new tracks! (Especially because new music for Shattered has been on the top of my list for a while.) I love the idea of region specific music - I've seen people suggest music for different level feelings, like flooded versus chasm music tracks - would that ever be considered?

Arkaide

It would be nice if all the bosses had their own music.
