Patreon Weekly #11 - August 16th 2019

Hey Patrons!

I've got two major updates this week. Firstly, some progress on the aforementioned boss improvements, and some teaser info on new prison enemies!

Work on Goo and Tengu:

I've added four new room types which are exclusive to Goo's boss floor, pictured below. One of these will spawn every time, and will contain goo in that dark nest in the center. I haven't yet adjusted how Goo's floor is built though, so some work still needs to be done there so that it's not just a simple loop. I'm also going to experiment with adding some texturing to Goo's nest, as currently it's just a solid color layered ontop of the floor.

I've also got a more solid design in mind for Tengu now, and have started restructuring how the prison boss floor works accordingly. You can see a WIP of the new start of the prison boss floor below, as well as Tengu's new arena on the right. I'm involving the other prison cells in the boss fight this time, so I've dropped their number to 4 from 8, so things don't get too repetative.

New Prison Enemies:

The prison is getting one entirely new enemy, and one enemy reskin.

The reskin is due to moving gnoll shamans to live exclusively in the caves, as I want to better concentrate the gnoll populations. There's be more on what I'm specifically changing about shamans later. To take their place, I am adding a new robotic enemy to the prison: DM-100s. The DM-100 is an early model of dwarven 'defense machine' which was meant to use electricity to protect dwarven miners and keep their city secure.  The machines were a disappointment however, as they could only deliver a fairly weak shock without frying their own internal components. The dwarves went back to the drawing board and gifted these failed units to the human prison above, thinking they might be useful as automated guards. The prison never put them to use, but now it seems something else has activated them...

The prison is also getting a new and unique enemy: Necromancers. These apprentice dark mages have flocked to the prison as it is the perfect place to practice their craft. Necromancers fight exclusively through summoned minions, and have little offensive capabilities of their own. While battling through their summons is definitely doable, smart adventurers might find they fare better if they go for the necromancer directly first, before they can summon more undead. As they are a new enemy, I still have to spend some time figuring out exactly how they will behave, but I think the added diversity will be quite welcome.

Comments

As mentioned, I will talk more about shamans in a later weekly.

And shamans?

The goo rooms do all share a similar core shape, which is a sort of a necessity as the center needs to be open for goo's nest, and I also want to avoid 1x1 pillars are people often use those to cheese Goo. Keep in mind that only one of these will spawn per run, so I'm not too worried about repetitiveness. I may also look to move some of these rooms to be regular uncommon rooms at some point, in which case I'll add some new (and perhaps a bit more unique) rooms for Goo itself.

As mentioned, DM-100s will be essentially a reskin of shamans (perhaps with very minor changes), which means that they will be a ranged enemy that attacks with lightning.

Shattered Pixel

Does this mean prison won't have any ranged enemies?

im loving the way this looks! the one issue i find is that several of the goo rooms look repetitive - most involve four obstructions in the corner. the fourth one in particular looks less interesting, as the first has corners that can be used, and the third has very small exists from the center of the nest which add a unique element, but the fourth is just kinda... there. i think trying to make it a bit different, something more like the second room, would help add more variety in the generation options in my opinion.
