Mulholland Drive (2001) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

The winner of our David Lynch poll!

What a movie to introduce me to David Lynch! Everything was fine until like 3/4 of the way through when things changed.

Just a heads up that I have a 13 minute section in the outro of trying to make sense of everything. There's a lot of staring and thinking involved haha

I will rewatch this with my theory in mind, to see if it all makes sense to me. I'm not sure if this is one of those movies that are up for interpretation, so I'm sticking by what I figured out. Replaying the movie in my mind, my theory can make sense at least πŸ˜…

There are still some aspects that are very "wtf is going on?!" and that I'm assuming have some symbolism or something attached to it, which I don't want to say I don't care about, but my mind doesn't work with symbolism, so I just leave it as "people will interpret that how they want. I can make it fit in my theory without symbolism and that's good enough for me".

I was thinking of recording my outro on a different day after I had time to think about it, but in reality, I don't analyze anything if I'm not recording a reaction, so it was best to record it immediately after.

Starting this channel has made me realize how much I didn't pay attention to anything in movies before. I never gave movies my full attention for some reason. I literally watch movies very differently now, and I absolutely love it even though I find a lot of things predictable (not this movie though, that's for sure 🀣)

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are amazing!!

I couldn't do this without you <3

I do think our genders greatly affect how we see that scene. I get that she takes control, but it's still the fact that she is put in that situation to start with. I've auditioned and I've seen similar things happen, and it's always uncomfortable. I do see where you're coming from with her being empowered, but realistically, for most women, this would be an awkward and disgusting position to be in πŸ˜…. Going into a cramped office with a lot of people to audition in front of is fine, usually you have a bit more space, but it's not a requirement for auditioning for most roles lol. The director was odd though! It was a doozy to make sense of it all. I appreciate a movie much more when I can make sense of it (whether I'm wrong or right, it doesn't matter lol). And it's interesting to see how adamant people are of their interpretation, like for Blade Runner.

Wanted to add another two toughts: - I was really impressed how you put everything together at the end - I was just flattened after the first time I saw it. - I was surprised by your reaction to the audition - for me this scene started very creepily and I felt uneasy for Betty, but once the director says "Action!" and she takes command, everything changes. You suddenly see her in a different light, whole new dimensions are added to her character and the power in the room shifts dramatically. I've never auditioned for anything (and I'm a guy), so I guess I have a dramatically different background to you, Vero - it's just interesting how different our reaction to this scene is: I loved it and found it empowering, but I think I can see where you come from.

Probably, possibly, maybe.

It's one of my favourite films too, I love the story he's developed and how he chose to show it to us. The intrigue kept me interested from the get go!! I'm constantly amazed at what some people come up with, and always love to see how they visualize it. I hope you enjoy watchign it again this week!!! I think it's great that it's in theatres near you!!!

Verowak

Yes, it will be edited for YouTube! I have no idea if it'll perform well or if it's popular enough, but there's only one way to find out

Verowak

Oh, honey... just wait 'til ya get to ERASERHEAD (1977). 🀒

AuntVes

btw, are you planing to do a Youtube Edit of 'Mulholland Drive'? There are barely any reactions to it on YT; it's somewhat understandable given the content and confusion, but it's a shame nevertheless, considering that it's one of the best movies of the century (so far).

FermatSim

I've had heard a lot about Lynch before, but it took until last week that I first saw 'Mulholland Drive' (at the movies, via a glorious, restored copy)... ...and it immediately became one of my favorite films of all time. It has this eery, dreamlike quality that sucks you in and shakes you. For me, the story (and making sense of it) isn't as important as the pictures, the music, the feelings that are stirred and set loose. I loved watching it a second time with you, Vero, and I'm looking forward to seeing it at the cinema for a third time next week. For me, this is more than a movie - it's a spiritual experience...

FermatSim

I'd love to see a movie that's harder to wrap my head around 🀣 I'm not sure if it exists

Verowak

I'm glad. 🌺 Almost all the rest will be easier to wrap your head around. π–¦Ή

AuntVes

I bet a lot of people went to see this many times in the theatre lol I love the confusion of everything, and how there's a shift during the movie where we realize we have no idea what's going on anymore

Verowak

I think it was just fantastic! I think it was a great movie for me to start my David Lynch exploration 😁

Verowak

This is one of Lynch's weirdest. I wouldn't have recommended it be your first... but people-at-large always seem to love watching reacters jump-in headfirst. πŸ˜† I have previously suggested what I deem a more natural, palatable way to explore Lynch. πŸ‘‚ But, I'm just glad you've started! πŸ’ƒ Some of his stuff you'll love with all your soul. I don't know that this will be one of them. 🚦

AuntVes

I think I saw this 5 times in theaters when it came out. Love that you're watching this and I hope you continue on the David Lynch journey! But yeah, Lynch's films are heavy on both intuition (it's not necessarily knowing about all the details, just the general story) and lots of subtext which means lots of symbolism, but hey, that's art-house cinema.

Jimmie V

Yes!! 😁

Verowak

This is the girl.
