The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Hey guys, it's time for some dinosaurs!!

Continuing the franchise, and I went in knowing nothing about this, only my best educated guesses as to what it would be about.

I don't know what it is, but seeing dinosaurs in action is pretty marvelous and would be terrifying 😨

I enjoyed the movie, though not as much as the first one since there's only so many new things you can add to the story without it feeling forced.  I am worried about Jurassic Park 3 and Jurassic World because of this.  I can't really think of a good way to continue the franchise, but I'll see what others have come up with!

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

I’d love to look for dinosaur bones yes! I’d just need training on how to do it. The only fossil I have in my possession is a massive Megalodon tooth (the largest known shark to have ever existed). I’m a big fan of pterosaurs as well! I wouldn’t get hung up on the semantics of dinosaur or not - they’re very closely related though they technically branched off before the last common ancestor of all dinosaurs. Deciding where to start a clade is rather arbitrary in biology so if we wanted to we could simply define dinosaur as anything after the last common ancestor of pterosaurs and dinosaurs. The pterosaur at the end of the movie, as well as the ones in JP3 are called “pteranodon”. My favorite however is called “Quetzalcoatlus” - the largest flying animal ever - taller than a giraffe and larger than a single engine airplane. You should look them up! They’re almost creepy in the sense that your brain can’t comprehend such animals existing, let alone flying, we have no modern analogue. With regards to velociraptors, there were such animals - however the JP “velociraptor” never actually existed. If you saw a real velociraptor you’d probably just think it was some hawk or bird. They were around that size and fully feathered. The JP raptor is closer to size to an animal called “Deinonychus” yet even that one is too small relative to the films. After JP 1 they discovered the largest raptor ever called “Utahraptor”, however that one was too big to represent the JP raptors. All of them were also completely feathered head to toe. JP Rex is still reasonably accurate though. As always you’re the best though the “Veroceraptor” joke left much to be desired 😂😂😂

Seeing dinosaurs/animals just do their own thing without being made out to be bloodthirsty monsters is way better then purposefully making them evil. It's so much more believable and interesting to watch! Being a huge dinosaur nerd, would you want to be a part of a team that searches for dinosaur bones? As a non-dinosaur nerd, that would be amazing, so I can't imagine how much more awesome it would be for you. I always am fascinated by flying, and though I've learned that they aren't dinosaurs, I had a pterodactyl toy when I was younger. It came in a dinosaur egg, so it was always my favourite 'dinosaur'. If that doesn't count, then I would default to velociraptor (or a vero-ciraptor 🤣) I feel like I've seen a carnotaurus in the Nature museum in Ottawa!! They are fascinating

This is the only other JP movie I like. I’m a huge dinosaur nerd who collects dinosaur figures. I also have a tattoo of a dinosaur on my shoulder with the words “never forget” under it 😂. The thing that makes the first two Jurassic Parks amazing is that the dinosaurs aren’t movie monsters, they’re living breathing animals who behave like animals. When the Rex broke out of her enclosure she behaved like a dog would given the same circumstance. She sniffs the jeep, walks away, sees a light so she checks it out, pushes the jeep a little with her nose then roars at it, finally deciding to try to get the kids by knocking the jeep over. This is exactly what a dog would do to RC cars with things moving around in them. In other words it shows curiosity, and behaves like any predatory animal would given that stimuli. The newer movies make the dinosaurs into relentless killing machines which isn’t really my cup of tea. That is the magic of the first two movies in my view. As always great reaction. What’s your favorite dinosaur verowak? Mine is carnotaurus.

23 out of 34, you're almost there!! I've heard good things about Hook, but I know nothing of Peter Pan so not sure if it's best to start with the animated one or what exactly. I was very surprised by Jurassic Park 3 since most of the YT comments said it was bad, but I actually really enjoyed it. I'm honestly a bit worried about the Jurassic World ones being awful, but I'll have to check them out to see for myself 😂

Omg I just finished watching your reaction to JP3! Honestly, having now seen 23 of Spielberg’s 34 films, I wouldn’t call any of them bad. Hook is probably the closest for me, but even that was a fun watch with a few moments of brilliance. But yes, the original Jurassic Park’s footsteps are massive. And while I don’t think the two sequels’ footsteps would create ripples in a glass of water, they’re both solid blockbusters in their own right. I’m not a big fan of Jurassic World tho, I think all three Park films are better than that one. Never saw either of its sequels but I hope to catch up with them soon, now that I’ve rewatched the original trilogy.

Is there such a thing as a bad Spielberg movie? I learned last month that Kubrick had started A.I, and Spielberg finished it, which is interesting since before that I had never seen Kubrick's name mentioned in regards to A.I., it was always Spielberg. That being said, I'm planning to get more familiar with Spielberg's style, since he has a lot of movies that I haven't seen yet. Titanic is high up there, even though I know what happens to the ship at the end 😁 Even though it's very hard to follow in the original Jurassic Park's footsteps, I actually think the second and third one were both really good!

Just watched this reaction. I hadn’t seen the movie since I was a child, a very long time ago, but I’ve been making an effort lately to watch more of Spielberg’s filmography so I had to revisit this. Clearly it pales in comparison to the first film, but I think it’s still quite good, with some pretty fantastic set pieces at least. The sequence with the base going over the cliff is absolutely brilliant. Looking forward to checking out your reaction to the third film, since I don’t remember that one either, and I think it’s actually my dad’s favourite. As for what Spielberg movies you should watch next, A.I. Artificial Intelligence is my personal favourite, but I think that works best if you’re somewhat familiar with the filmmaking styles of both Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick, who had originally developed the film before giving it to Spielberg to direct. After Kubrick’s death, Spielberg made the film as an homage to him, and it’s a fascinating blend of their styles and sensibilities, so it plays best if you have some familiarity with both of their work. Otherwise I would suggest Catch Me If You Can, which is an incredibly fun and touching film, one that I would say is somewhat underrated in his filmography. Or if you’re a fan of musicals, his recent West Side Story remake is an absolute must watch. Also you should definitely watch Titanic as well since you mentioned at the end you haven’t seen that before. I rewatched it recently for the first time in years and it is a stunning romantic epic. Definitely one of James Cameron’s best, and he doesn’t make bad movies.

I started writing that I didn't know he directed The Lost World, but then realized I was thinking of "Jurassic World" 😂 I get confused between those a lot!! I'm really glad that JW was better than expected, especially since no one wanted it. I remember thinking when it came out that it was so random that they decided to continue the franchise, and assumed it was to try to milk it as much as possible. It feels like there have been a lot of franchise continuations that probably shouldn't have been made. I remember hearing quite the backlash when Indiana Jones 4 came out (the one with Shia Labeouf, I think it's #4).

I haven't watched the reaction yet. But just to validate your comments: I think most people would agree that this is a series in which the first movie is amazing, and none of the sequels quite live up to it. (I think "The Lost World" probably comes closest to capturing the aesthetic of JP 1, simply because Spielberg returned as director.) An interesting thing about Jurassic World (the 4th movie) is that no one wanted it. In fact, when the trailers came out, they got a pretty negative response. However, when the actual movie released, it was a smash hit, and most people liked it. Myself, I thought it had some issues, but it was still somewhat of a pleasant surprise. It actually made me look forward to the next movie. Unfortunately, Greg S. is correct, that the two movies after that really weren't great. (Full confession: I was disappointed enough in J.W. Fallen Kingdom, the 5th movie, that I never bothered to see the final movie, so it's not quite fair of me to judge it.)

I feel like in every movie, humans will need to get dumber and dumber in order to keep going back 😂 I'm very curious about Jurassic World though!

Verowak

Like you said The Lost World isn't quite as good as the first, but it's still enjoyable. JP3 is the weakest of the originals but still worth a watch. Jurassic World is great though, a nice reboot. Unfortunately the next two JW movies go down from there.
