Armageddon (1998) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Another Wednesday, another movie-reaction! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Before we start, just a heads up that the poll for War Movie is still up if you haven't voted!

Also a reminder that instead of Everything Everywhere All at Once next week, it'll be Jurassic Park ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

It's not everyday that you see John McClane team up with Bruce Wayne and have Arwen as a daughter, but here we are!

I didn't know this was a Michael Bay movie until the day that I recorded my reaction, so I was jokingly expecting explosions, and ... well there were a lot more than I expected.  If you ignore a lot of the things that are not possible, this movie is pretty good!

I'm usually pretty good at just ignoring the things that don't make sense, but at times I found it a bit ridiculous, but I focused on the parts that were good ๐Ÿคฃ

This movie felt like a BIG change in the quality of movies that I've been watching, which is weird, I always thought that Armageddon was an epic movie that was well regarded by everyone.

I would love to know what your favorite end of the world type movie is!

Reminder that you need your own copy of the movie to watchalong, and that there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Armageddon (1998) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Overwatch is a game from Blizzard, now it's Overwatch 2. I should go play it ๐Ÿ˜„ The cinematics focus on each character in the game, their abilities and their game room. This type of thing is done for most games probably, except that the Overwatch cinematics were like really good ๐Ÿ™‚ You don't need to see them in order... Here I picked 4 for you to check out, Hero - https://youtu.be/cPRRupAM4DI Rise and Shine - https://youtu.be/8tjcm_kI0n0 The Last Bastion - https://youtu.be/to8yh83jlXg Honor and Glory - https://youtu.be/sQfk5HykiEk

The cold is terrifying! I've seen people talk about their experience in the Arctic and Antarctic and how quickly your body parts can freeze, and it is scary! I haven't seen any Overwatch cinematics, could be neat to watch!

Verowak

The cold is so dangerous... I think you'd die in seconds. There are crazy descriptions of the risks... The game Overwatch has a cinematic set in Antarctica and it has a little secret reference to one of the movies. Those Overwatch cinematics are great if you haven't seen them. They're great for reactions, they're like 5 minutes long and free to react to since they're game cinematics. The 2nd movie they watch as tradition is THE SHINING (1980) - no spoiler as to why ๐Ÿ™‚

Mannygogou

I knew about the Antarctic research station and how very few people stay for the winter, but I didn't know that there is a tradition of watching two movies! That's a really neat fun fact. Staying on the station in isolation is definitely isn't something just anyone could do ๐Ÿ˜จ

Verowak

It's those guilty pleasure movies that can be so fun!!

Verowak

Despite the actors and the director not liking the movie, I think they all did fantastic!

Verowak

oh I have one more story... It's about desolation. The most desolate place on Earth... is where scientists go to study and do experiments and that is the Antarctic research station. For the long winter everyone leaves because it's too dangerous except for a small skeleton crew that stays behind. On that day before the desolation and before the isolation of being trapped there completely surrounded by certain death they have a tradition to watch two movies... The first movie is the classic The Thing From Another World (1951)... because it is set in a bleak frozen place where scientists are doing experiments. A reporter comes looking for a story and he gets more than what he bargained for. They watch this movie every year in Antarctica as soon as the last flight leaves and they know they're facing months of isolation on that bleak desolate place.

Mannygogou

I'm always cautious not to spoil anything. It's hard to imagine what could it be about, Joe vs The Volcano. Maybe I'll just say that I watched it over and over many times. It's not the greatest movie ever made but... I guess I got something out of it. LoL you're probably right ๐Ÿ˜„

Mannygogou

Loved this reaction! Armageddon is a movie I adore and is easily in my top 10 favorite movies!

Someone facing their own mortality can be so fascinating to see! Joe VS the Volcano sounds ridiculous and definitely a comedy. The sort of movie where you have low budget special effects and very cheesy/clichรฉ storyline ๐Ÿ˜‚ That's my initial thoughts from just the title lol Ideally the movies where the protagonist dies aren't on a list for me to read. Actually, any movie where anyone dies being on a list of "X dies" is a spoiler ๐Ÿ˜‚ I love going into a movie and knowing basically nothing, it really surprises me when unexpected things happen

Verowak

okay there is a sub-category type of movie where the person has to face their own mortality... so it doesn't have to be the whole world going bye-bye but the protagonist, like a personal armageddon. An example is, Joe VS The Volcano (1990) - where Joe squares off with a volcano... Oh I think I'll intersperse this with two other types - one where the hero runs towards certain death (like doing a Fox Mulder running toward danger), and intermingled with where the hero is practically shaking hands with death... Defending Your Life (1991) - a comedy on the edge of the veil Lethal Weapon (1987) - a cop on the edge Backdraft (1991) - a firefighter on the edge Groundhog Day (1993) - a reporter on the edge of a holiday, comedy Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - on the edge of the day after today (sci-fi) Meet Joe Black (1998) - there's something about Joe Meet John Doe (1941) - a man on the edge but could a woman pull him back? The Abyss (1989) - on the edge of the abyss (sci-fi) The Thing From Another World (1951) - reporter on the edge of the world (classic sci-fi) It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - George on the edge, a holiday classic (There could be a list of movies where the protagonist dies - but that list would be blank because it would be all spoilery!, lol ๐Ÿ˜† )

๐Ÿคฃ๐ŸคฃIt has more of an impact!! I missed the comment, thanks for pointing it out. I wasn't receiving emails to let me know when I get comment responses for some reason. I turned that on now!

Verowak

To me The Core and Independence Day are good fun, while Deep Impact is more dramatic you know having more of an impact, a deeper impact. Oh by the way I don't know if you saw I wrote a comment about Everything Everywhere All At Once in that post about June lineup (here https://www.patreon.com/posts/june-schedules-83696072 ) ๐Ÿ™‚

Mannygogou

Just means I'll have to watch Terminator to find out ๐Ÿ˜ I remember how 2012 was supposed to be the "end of the world" based on some cultures, I didn't know there was a movie made. I'm very intrigued now!

Verowak

Deep Impact is anti-Armageddon ๐Ÿ˜† umm... just so you know maybe most people wouldn't put Terminator as post-apocalyptic it's kind of a mixed category, it's not a setting like Mad Max, it's a different take on the apocalypse, just FYI. We've covered most of the end-of-the-world scenarios except a supervolcano erupting. There are a few volcano movies but they're not "big enough" except we have one in the movie 2012 (2009). I left it out before but I do enjoy it as a fun apocalypse movie.

Mannygogou

Oh wow so many movies!!! The Core has sci-fi AND end of the world?! Sign me up!! Deep Impact is the one I always get confused with for Armageddon since they both released in the same year. Post-apocalyptic movies are great! I definitely need more of those in my life, and Terminator will be at the top of the list. I've seen Mad Max Fury Road, which was really good. I feel like I've heard of Contagion before, and it was a movie I wanted to watch but I completely forgot about it, so thank you for pointing it out! Independence Day is one that I want to watch, and recently found out it has aliens.

Verowak

end of the world movie? Ooh I enjoy those... Let me pull some out of a hat... The Core (2003) - this is science fiction adventure, and yes the world is ending Deep Impact (1998) - this one has astronaut characters which at the time I was surprised at how much I appreciated that aspect of it The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008) - this is the remake, it has some good moments Don't Look Up (2021) - this is a comedy but yes the world is ending (Hmm there's a few more but I'm running out in this particular category. These are where everyone must die type.) There are other movies with survivors and those are post-apocalyptic types like Mad Max Fury Road, The Terminator. There are also the worldwide calamity type but the world does not end like Contagion and The Andromeda Strain. Then danger for the world in John Carpenter's The Thing, as well as the original The Thing From Another World (1951) so fun. There are also battle for Earth types such as Edge of Tomorrow or Independence Day, both very entertaining.

Mannygogou

That's what I'm getting now that I've seen it ๐Ÿ˜‚ I knew nothing of movies back then

Verowak

I've never actually seen Armageddon. But my impression was that it was more of a popular movie that was regarded as a guilty pleasure by even its fans.
