Mission: Impossible (1996) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

It's time for another Movie Reaction Wednesday!!!

I always assumed Mission: Impossible movies were just your typical action movies.  I have been proven wrong!

The stunts make everything look so much more real, it's quite remarkable, actually.  I was rewatching the train scene and it looks scary as all hell.

They did such a great job with the story and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

I enjoyed the way they showed people's true intentions.  It wasn't super obvious at the start, then it slowly gives more information so we can figure out some things.

Reminder that you need your own copy of the movie to watchalong, and that there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

I'm already looking forward to Mission: Impossible 2!!  What other Tom Cruise movies would you recommend?

Oh also, as for shorter intro/outro, my idea is that the edited YT version might be shorter.  I've tried in the past few months for altering my intro/outro lengths and I much prefer talking before and after the movie reaction.  So Patreon intro/outro will have me chatting before and after the movie, while the YT edit may be shrunk down for a bit to see if I notice anything different in the analytics.

Here's hoping the weather is nice but not too hot for everyone!

Yeah, I wish I had never seen it so I could watch it now lol I liked his character in that because he wasn't the macho perfect action star. Definitely had some comedy in it, which was fantastic!

Ah, I'm almost disappointed that you've seen "Edge of Tomorrow," as that would've made a terrific reaction. However, at least now you have an example of what I'm talking about. Cruise isn't afraid to look foolish in that movie and poke fun at his action hero image, and the story is better for it. As great as a lot of his earlier movies are in the 80s and early 90s (aka "Rain Man") there wasn't much evidence back then that he'd eventually be so good at this almost satirical style of acting.

I was not expecting to enjoy it so much! I'm super curious to see how the franchise goes and how it'll get better and better (from what I can tell of people's comments). The helicopter was... interesting lol The most far fetched thing about the movie, everything else felt pretty grounded which was really nice. I've seen Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow and enjoyed his character, so I'm curious to see his acting style evolution through this franchise and possibly other movies as well. For now I'm most excited about MI2 since it seems to be the worst one 😂 The fact that they recovered from MI2 and went on to make a franchise that so many people love is quite remarkable!

I'm glad you enjoyed this so much. A few notes: (a) This first MI has an old-fashioned "noir" quality that I don't think is really recaptured in any of the other movies. I mean, they're great in their own right, but this particular style doesn't carry over. (b) The helicopter in the tunnel is really outlandish and fantastical, whereas the action in later movies (especially 3 onward) feels way more grounded. As to what is "better," I guess it depends on your personal preference. (c) I'm especially looking forward to when you get to the later entries. If you thought Cruise was likeable here, I think he's even more so when he injects these random moments of self-deprecation. (That's a genuinely interesting thing I find about Cruise's career. Starting in the 2000s, there's a subtle comedic element to a lot of his performances that was largely absent in his earlier movies.) (d) As I've said, I feel like MI2 gets a lot of things wrong. However, whether you enjoy it or not, it's at least interesting to see just how drastically different it is from later movies. Like, you can practically imagine them in a writer's room discussing how they had to rethink the direction they were headed in if the series was to endure.
