How Lore Works in League:
The Game vs. The Story: The game itself has no real timeline; you can play whoever you want in a 5v5 arena. The actual story comes from reading champion biographies and short stories on the website (which not everyone reads).
The "Clues" in Game: Even if you don't read the lore, the champions have voice lines and animations that hint at their connections:
- Vi: Calls Caitlyn "Cupcake."
- Jinx: "You think I'm crazy? You should see my sister!"
- Ekko: "I had a crush on you... until you started talking to the gun."
What an "Invested" Player Knew Before Watching:
If you knew the lore, you walked in knowing the world building
- The World Map: There are many regions. Piltover/Zaun is just one dual-city. Noxus is a brutal empire (where the Medardas come from).
- The Relationships:
o Vi & Jinx: Everyone guessed they were sisters, but the show was the first time it was officially confirmed.
o Jayce & Viktor relationship
o Heimerdinger: Players knew he is a Yordle
o Singed: Players knew he is a mad chemist who runs unethical experiments, what he is up to and why he does this
o Janna: Players knew Janna (the goddess mentioned in the show) is actually a fully
playable champion who protects Zaun.
What Was New to Everyone:
- The Origin Story: Seeing Jinx as "Powder" and witnessing exactly why she went mad.
- New Characters: Silco, Mel, and Sevika never existed in the game (before arcane).
- Vander
The Missing Champions:
Since the show focuses on Piltover and Zaun, players were expecting to see other famous champions from these regions who were surprisingly absent .
- Camille: An elite enforcer with blade-legs, she is the one who really runs Piltover from the shadows. If there is corruption or a threat to the city, Camille is usually the one "fixing" it.
- Blitzcrank : A gentle, sentient yellow robot, players were waiting for Viktor to build him, but he built the Hexcore instead.
- Dr. Mundo: A massive purple monster who thinks he is a doctor, he is a staple of Zaun's "creepy" vibe.
- Twitch: A giant, crossbow-wielding mutant rat (we saw a rat getting experimented on in Episode 1, but the actual champion Twitch never appeared.)
- Urgot: A terrifying cyborg with shotgun knees who leads a cult in the depths of Zaun. He is a major villain in Zaun, but the show focused on Silco instead.
- Zac: A sentient green goo-man made of toxic sludge who tries to be a hero.
- Seraphine: A pop star who sings to unite Piltover and Zaun.

Caitlyn being Ambessa's Sith Apprentice is so cool, I really like her arc this season.

Subs should be fine. Doesn't really have spoilers at the moment. More like easter eggs for people that play the game maybe.

The subtitles for Arcane are fine. There isn't really spoilers there, only references for the people who actually know the LoL lore.

second what filipe said. Those who know the worrld can recognize some name drops, and i tihnk that's why sometimes the subittles say things slightly ahead, to either tease or distract, without impacting the actual show itself.
If you remember, they name dropped Viktor's name in the subtitles of episode 1 before he said "i'm viktor" to jayce.
So even some of the background items, like seeing things related to ekko, even in the intro itself (FUN FACT, the "intro" always has a "diffference" between episodes, like an extra frame or sneak peak without context.)(
But yeah, some "events" that happened this episode with some mysterious enemy, or some easter eggs back in season 1 in benzo's shop in the background as items in the game.
Or when cait/vi went to the brothel and caitlin was flirting with a girl there, who was wearing a lamb mask , associated with the personification of Death (Kindred, the Lamb and the Wolf)., so LITERALLY implying the "Caitlyn is flirting with Death" as a hanging fruit etc.
Even Caitlyn/Vi's relationship was only hinted at in the game, it was only confirmed in arcane. So even league players had their "oh shit, they actually confirmed it, that's a surprise" etc.
So while some stuff are there to itch the league player's interest, it doesn't detract from the show itself. In fact, it's those little easter eggs that got people that only followed Arcane to go and watch some league cinematics or Lore (I HIGHLY recommend watching Necrit's breakdown videos on youtube affter the music videos or lore drops for explanations as those are more "vague" for newcomers). but only AFTER the season 2 is done to avoid spoilers.
But tthose who ONLY watch arcane did not get dissappoiinted of "oh i wish i knew the game so i could understand X", everything is explained, and in fact, the Arcane universe was basically similar to a DC /Marvel Retcon, where the arcane universe BECAME the "truth" / canon story of speculations in the past, so much so that Riot went ahead and backfilled some earlier stories and tied to Arcane as a lead up, or as a "follow up".
I can't explain more, but even some "sounds" in season 1 episode 3, are easter eggs for people who know league and waiting for S2 etc. All of those are rewarding for league players like me, to put tinfoil hats on, but so far , as you saw, it didnt take away from the show for those who DONT KNOW. :)

I don't believe there's any big subtitle reveals aside from Isha's name. Singed was called by name in the first season - I think it was Silco

To add to a later question: I’m a bit behind on LoL lore from roughly the last 2–3 years since I stopped playing, so take this with a grain of salt. As I said in my previous comment, Riot had been holding back on releasing major lore for Piltover/Zaun and their characters in favor of Arcane.
It’s also worth remembering that LoL lore isn’t linear — we usually get random story snippets following different characters or events that can be separated by vast stretches of time, sometimes even thousands of years. That said, there are storylines that are direct consequences of others, and there are a few big “Avengers-style” events that actually push the global timeline forward.
The last one I can confidently speak about is The Ruination. It’s one of the biggest events in Runeterra’s “modern history,” involving characters from almost every region. When you look at the details and try to place it on the timeline, it appears to take place at least 30–40 years after the invention of hextech. If that’s correct, then by the time most current champions and potential future series are set, Jinx would realistically be in her 50s or older.

About the issue of spoilers for players, it’s actually kind of mixed. In short, the series manages to feel fresh and surprising even for very lore-obsessed players like me. To explain why, we need a bit of context: beginning in 2016, League of Legends’ lore started a full continuity rework to become more cohesive. The initial drafts of Arcane were already part of this broader revision process. The way Riot handled this in game was to release new stories aligned with the updated continuity first, and only later wen they pile up go back to remake older material that no longer fit. This meant that some regions story lines and characters ended up being behind others in terms of updated lore and this was especially true for Piltover and Zaun. Riot deliberately held back on major lore updates for these two cities because the plan was for Arcane itself to serve as their big, definitive lore update.
This isn’t entirely true anymore. Years later, Riot decided that the “cinematic universe” (Arcane, Runeterra stories, etc.) would exist as its own continuity, so writers wouldn’t be constrained by having to stay perfectly aligned with the game’s lore. More recently, however, it seems like the direction has shifted again — since Arcane was so successful, Riot has started adjusting the game’s lore and presentation to bring it more in line with Arcane instead.
