Core failure doesn't actually result in an explosion... The material simply heats up until all the coolant evaporates away, then melts through every layer of containment, even the ground until it eventually stops somewhere. Both Chernobyl and Fukushima involved hydrogen ignition which resulted in the explosions we know about.
