I'm not really even talking about matching the mouth movements, nor would I want it to be a literal 1:1 translation.
Write the lines so that they convey the meaning, in dialogue that sounds natural for the world and character that is speaking. And if a line is too long, or too short to naturally voice and fit with the given animation, then change the animation to match the line, not the other way around. That is all.
It's been a while since I've watched the FMAB dub, and I try and forget cringe dub lines, not remember them, so I don't have any specific examples for you. They do exist though, if we were watching it together I could easily point them out in real time.

I would agree if the anime was some highly detailed work of art like Arcane, where the lips, the mouth and the face were animated to reflect every word they say. But in this case, even watching the sub, you can tell the voice never syncs perfectly with any mouth movement. You have to tell me specific jarring flaws from fmab in particular that makes the dub so much worse. In regards to recontextualizing the scenes, that can't be helped, but I'd argue literal sub translations are often messy since Japanese doesn't necessarily translate as good to English. A prime example is Connie's "Eavesdropping joke" from AoT. The dub took the liberty of changing it to make it make more sense. I'd argue that's better than literally translating a joke that just won't work in English. And to be fair I don't see any jarring changes in the translation in the dub. So again, I'd like to ask if you have any particular jarring examples from fmab, since you say it's also full of these flaws.

Yep, good direction can definitely reduce this effect, but I've never seen it reduce it to zero for every single line.
FMAB is no exception in this regard.

Seems like things a good director can work around and deliver a memorable product anyway.

I'm glad you asked!
You see, when any animated series is produced, regardless of language, all of the voice lines will eventually go through this process:
- First, the line is written.
- At some point, a voice actor speaks and records the line.
- Later, a scene containing the line gets animated, and that animation is made so that the finished line fits with the animation.
On the other hand, when a dub is produced, the lines in the dub language are written and voice acted to match the preexisting animation, and this is where the flaw is introduced, because that animation was made to fit lines written and spoken in the original language, not the dubbed language.
If a voice line is a lot longer or shorter in the dubbed language than in the original language or if the character's mouth movements don't fit the dubbed line, then the line is changed to fit the preexisting animation. Possibly at the expense of the line sounding "stilted" or "unnatural" or "cringey" or even just sounding like someone ironically trying to do a generic anime character / sonic the hedgehog impression.
This isn't a problem for every single line, but for the ones that it is, it's a flaw, plain and simple. Compare any dubbed anime to something like Arcane, or Invincible and you can tell the difference pretty easily.

That's a way to look at it. I'm totally content with Ben and Anna being the rare fmab sub reactors

I'm also such a fan of this series, it's the first series produced by Bones (MHA) that I watched!
Also, this is comment 2 for a RWBY reaction.

I watch subbed exclusively, but FMA:B is the only anime where I consider the dub to be of the same quality as the original Japanese voice acting. They did great work on the script and performances.

What "production process" flaws are you referring to exactly in regards to fmab?

Im very excited you guys are watching this! Its SUCH a great show!
I dont know if you are aware, but this is one of the very few anime I would recommend Dubbed in English. It is very good dubbed. But if you prefer sub, all good too. Just wanted to let you know, since it is true that 99% of dubs are awful. (also highly recommend Psycho Pass and Cowboy Bebop dubbed)

No, it's not. It was produced in the same way most professional dubs are.
It is good, for a dub, but it still has those flaws from the production process that the original language audio lacks. If you like it despite those flaws good for you, watch it dubbed on your own.

Unfortunately, due to the way that professional English dubs are produced, they are almost always an inferior product compared to the voice acting in its original language.
There are exceptions of course, but very few.

Anything can be watched in sub or dub. The idea of dubs being universally worse is just troll bait from people who don't speak Japanese. It's not as different as they think. They either don't know or they're just complaining for the sake of getting things their preferred way.

Never said I wanted it in dub. I just said it's also a good option. No wrong choice here.

I thought the same! Everyone sounds really good. Edward, I cannot unhear Hange's voice. I also prefer Mustang's voice in the dub since it's a bit deeper. I think Bradley's dub was also better.

I would be interested for myself in a "Machete order" version that picks and chooses the best version of each early storyline from the 2003 version and FMAB to blend into Brotherhood as seamlessly as possible. I'm much, much more of a fan of the original early on, even if the direction it takes later on is much weaker IMO.

SUB and DUB are both great for this series, at least in my opinion, but as most channels watch the DUB, mixing things up for a change feels refreshing.

I think both are great, which isn't something I say lightly. Most channels react to the DUB, so it's always nice to see the rare SUB reaction.

As someone who only ever watched the dub I think the sub was pretty good for the first episode. The only part I wasn't a fan of is Mustangs japanese voice. Hopefully he'll grow on me because he's one of my favorites. I'm looking forward to see how Scar sounds in japanese

This is a fantastic and widely beloved series, but unfortunately that means everybody is going to have a very... enthusiastic opinion on the reactions. One you'll probably see a lot out of the gate is sub vs dub. This is one of the very few series where the dub is actually preferred by the bulk of the community. But you guys just do your own thing and whatever feels best to you!!!

While Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is amazing, the beginning 10-ish episodes is a bit of a mess. I would've loved you to check out the 2003 FMA for about 25 episodes before switching to FMAB, but I know that isn't popular with the audience. I'm sure you'll still love the show, just sad that people easily miss the amazing parts of the original adaptation :D
