The Scythe and the Crossbow has been indeed, the two hardest weapons to work with so far. You'd think it'd be easy to make a simple swing animation. but you have to make it look and feel like it's reaching out into the area in front, despite being 2D
As for the Crossbow, I just had trouble with it's visual design. I felt the last one was a bit too elegant for Vicky.
Anyway, these two are the reason why I have been taking such a huge hiatus on development. I'm hoping to come back into it with extra bravado, this Halloween.
I originally came up with the concept of Vicky during Halloween. The game design class I went to had an end-of-semester project we all had to do, and during the lecture, I doodled a mockup top-down shoot-em up in my notes, and me, being in the spooky spirit, put a little witch in the center. and then the ideas just started flooding in.
We had about 1 month to finish our project. and they would all be laid out at a public presentation, where random people could try them out. This game design class wanted us to always try and come up with something unique and original, but I didn't aim for anything like that, in terms of design. Just a simple shoot-em-up with a "see how long you can last" scenario. You know WASD? Good, that's all you need.
Strangely enough, it ended up being one of the most popular games in the event.
I often forget I actually put it on Gamejolt. https://gamejolt.com/games/vickyfirstbuild/453641
The second end-of-semester project rolled in and it was the same song and dance. But this time I wanted to go full 3D. Unfortunately, this was when COVID was the hot new fuzz, so we all had to have an online event. The game received some meh-ish scores, but I wasn't too bothered. I've never worked with 3D before, so gameplay wise, It was a bit more lackluster than the original 2D build.
It is also on Gamejolt
