*NEW YEAR, NEW POLL!!*

Here we go!! ^^ This poll ends in 48 Hours. The winner will be our next show added. Also, going forward we are going to try and differentiate polls in terms of the shows original release date, in hopes of more fair polls regarding recency bias.  Another poll will be coming out on the 17th!

Comments

Can someone tell them it's ok to watch OP/ED as they come out? Would be a shame for them not to watch the ED for ep 3.

Sanbiki No Kaeru

Season 1 is a sufficiently packaged story that is wrapped up nicely on its own edit: like y'all said though, I don't know if they'd catch on to stop before season 2. what a damn shame this show was

Wanderer

I don't know how you could watch these people and not have faith that they could treat these shows with respect. These shows all have good substance to them and I'd love to see them analysed

Wanderer

You should just watch all three shows not just one. And a lot of shows are coming to an end like SG and Spy Family

XDrakeX

well season 1 is really good. i would also say the same thing about the tv show heros. season 1 was amazing, then the rest was terrible.

Daniel Borrego

In Autosave's OP for this thread they literally wrote that in the future they would differentiate shows in polls to control for recency bias. Also the fact that these specific three shows is being polled on Patreon is that they were the top three winners on the poll they had on Youtube. This is the system they've been using and they've said as much. So yeah, they could've controlled for recency bias more in the first poll, but the fact that it ended up like this afterwards was due to poll results. In any case, my guess is that they will poll newer and older shows separately from now on, at least to some degree, so that they on the channel have a mix of both.

Asbjørn Kennedy

don't see the point of watching something you can't watch the end because it is lame. if they were to remake season 2 I would be abslutely for.

Erdanxela

im fuckiinmg cryi ng, god this community is so unbelievably based for choosing madoka, i love you all

Russell Francis

I love MaoMao, I like Madoka, but Tengoku is just perfect for them imo.

nikum

Even though it lost I hope you two get to Heavenly Delusion at some point. It’ll make for some great discussions. The animation and music is phenomenal too. I’m at least glad to know it’s on your radar 😄

Cubjitsu

Same here! One of the goats

TheMightyAnt

Well the mods do go through the comments a believe so someone would probably tell them. Season 1 is so good. Orphans, mystery, other, what else could you want ;) ben would love it

Daniel Borrego

@Andrew Brown I agree that some of the shows on my list are not undeniably essential, like My Hero Academia for example. That's why I said "some" of the shows on my list are essential, not all.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

they wont even know that its a shitshow until they actually start watching S2. they avoid ALL comment spoilers so they'd never hear us beg them to avoid S2 or even explain to them how different S2 is from the manga.

Nakirium

just dont watch season 2 ;)

Daniel Borrego

not with season 2 which is absolute garbage because they didn't stick to the manga

Erdanxela

Oh guys, i just figured out the perfect anime for them to react to....... the promised neverland 😉

Daniel Borrego

That's a wild take, I love Heavenly Delusion but when it comes to themes and analysis Madoka is probably the most thematically dense series in all of anime, like literally every frame of the show is filled with foreshadowing and themes and symbolism that's the whole point lol

SolarPaul

What? All of these shows are really good, 2 of them are very recent bangers and Madoka is one of the best anime of the last decade. Ya'll need to stop being salty just because your recommendation didn't get picked

SolarPaul

Yeah I was a lil outta pocket with this one, but my overall opinion still stands

long ass username

I think you guys need to chill. At the end of the day, it’s all subjective. I’d argue some of the shows on your list aren’t worth watching over some of the ones on the poll. My Hero Academia for example, while quite enjoyable is a very safe shounen and I don’t think it’s really “must watch”, but that’s just my opinion and I don’t expect everyone else to think the same as me. I could reel off a list of “essential anime” that would undoubtedly be different from yours, but it doesn’t make mine or yours any more or less valid. Everyone has different tastes and opinions. If you try to rush people to watch certain shows, or gatekeep and say “you’re not a real fan unless you’ve seen X” it’s just going to push people away. Remember as well, you’re not the only person subscribed to their Patreon. They want to consider a range of shows to appeal to lots of people, some of which you might not agree with. Finally, the more pressure you put on someone, the less they end up enjoying it. There’s a reason people often find anime fans toxic; just let them choose the shows they want to put on the poll, vote for your favourite and if they aren’t reacting to any shows you’re keen on, then just stay updated and hopefully one you like will be included later on. :)

Alan Bun

wdym those are great shows, what would you have suggested?

Ryonko

@jasmine anime is subjective, and you are just gatekeeping by calling things "undeniably essential". Someone who only watched dragon ball z and liked it is still "a fan of the medium"

Vartic

I don't know exactly what shows they have/haven't seen so I'm just going off things they haven't reacted to yet on the channel. The anime's that they should most definitely be watching before stuff on this poll are... -K-On! (Three Cours) -Neon Genesis Evangelion (Two Cours) -Hyouka (Two Cours) -Cowboy Bepop (Two Cours) -Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Ok this one is long but still essential) -Fruits Basket (2019) (Long) -Violet Evergarden (One Cour, very short) -Toradora (Two Cours) -The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Two Cours) -Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai (One Cour, very short) -My Hero Academia (Very Long) -A Place Futher than the Universe (One Cour, very short) Some of the ones on this list are just undeniably essential viewing for anyone who calls themselves a fan of the medium. It's insane to me some of these have never been on a poll or have gotten voted past. But, it is what it is.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

L

Flippnote

What shows would you recommend that they haven't seen? They do an episode a week so I personally prefer shorter shows that won't take them over a year.

Dreamz

It is a bit aggressive of a comment but he isn't wrong. Considering the long long list of anime they haven't seen... this poll is kinda absurd. Madoka Magica is the only show on here you can even defend being there.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

If they watch Madoka I will actually be the happiest person on earth

Russell Francis

Dude chill

Chuummy

This is the worst poll I’ve ever seen from you guys. Who suggests this to them when there are so many better options considering how relatively new to anime they are.

long ass username

Heavenly Delusion 🤞🏽

Cubjitsu

Yeah these are some wild poll choices. I agree. It seems like every poll they just select two or three really new and popular/highly rated anime (for obvious reasons) and than one or two older anime that they personally have wanted to watch for a while. Doesn't appear to me they are looking to the community for reccomendations, otherwise this poll would have very different shows on here.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

Tengoku beat Madoka (a popular series) in the YT poll with Tengoku gathering around 2.3k votes in total... 💀 So, clearly it's quite popular around these parts. No comment on the Code Geass thing as that's just pointless discussion. I mean, in general, is this topic really worth the effort of continually debating in a Patreon comments section? 🙃

Matter

Tengoku popularity didn't taper off cause it never existed. Code Geass would absolutely wipe the floor with it, the nostalgia goggles are even stronger with that crowd

ElectricAnt

Not a fan of any of the choices. I feel like the choices could be much better being that you guys haven't seen a lot of anime

L.C.

try paying attention next time

ElectricAnt

theres not really much to discuss about it really. its just an enjoyable show. it doesnt hold onto any cards like ascendance of a bookworm does for instance. theres basically zero mystery. each episode she figures everything out.

Daniel Borrego

Heavenly Delusion's Ending just doesn't... I feel like it lost its way or failed to tie things down at about halfway into the story. And then drove off a cliff for edge factor.

Ttsukasa

Long comment incoming, lol: I'm fully against your idea that the concept of recency bias should be applied to Madoka Magica as a series simply because a new movie is scheduled to be released within the next few months, and there are a few reasons why that is: Recency bias can basically be described as placing more importance on recent experiences (in this case, the release of a newer series) over more historic ones. It is an observable cognitive function that can be seen and applied to many areas. I am not implying that every single person who would prefer they watch Tengoku, or any other more recent series, are voting because of recency bias; I am saying that recency bias is a majority mindset, a mindset that is undeniably present and influential. The original TV-series for Madoka aired 13 years ago, with the sequel movie having released nearly 11 years ago. Tengoku aired just last year (not even a year ago). It garnered much attention as a seasonal show and was considered to be one of the best anime of 2023 by the majority of the online space that revolves around anime, and I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with that opinion. The movie I am referring to has not yet released. There is no actual release date as of yet, and it will only be released in theaters. As such, this channel will have no way of watching it upon release anyway. They will have to theoretically wait around half a year for the Blu-ray to watch past the release in Japanese theaters IF they wanted to react to it on their channel, possibly even longer. Moreover, Madoka Magica is an anime original series. I, nor anybody else, has the ability to judge the quality of movie right now. It could be amazing or terrible, with nobody knowing until it releases. Because of all of the combined factors, I am not recommending it due to the newest entry potentially releasing within the next few months, nor should the series have recency bias attached to it. I am looking forward to them watching the first two entries from over a decade ago and am only considering those in my preference, not the newest movie. My mentioning of the new release was simply a fun fact, like the 13th anniversary comment. Adding on to this, I also disagree with ElectricAnt. Consider this: there is absolutely no doubt that if Frieren were on the poll instead of Tengoku, Frieren would absolutely rip into Madoka Magica in regard to votes. Though if one looks at the statistics on database websites, many more more individuals have logged having watched Tengoku compared to Frieren. If this poll were to have released as Tengoku aired, I also have no doubt in my mind that it would have cleared Madoka in votes by quite a bit. Madoka is lucky in the fact that Tengoku's popularity has just ever so slightly tapered off due to it having released last spring, just enough to where people are starting (key word "starting") to look forward toward the other new seasonal releases. Madoka Magica is a simply a modern classic that is pushing against a seasonal series that would have won out against it a mere six months ago. Another older series, such as Code Geass for example, would have most definitely lost the poll if it were in Madoka's place despite its popularity, high praise, and critical acclaim.

Matter

It's not a recency for me. I like Apothecary better than the other choices. Most anime i like is older. It also looks like it won't be an issue

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Recency bias doesn't mean shit when 3x more people have seen Madoka than Tengoku

ElectricAnt

i dont know if madoka can really get hit with recency bias quite yet just cuz we can’t currently watch the new movie. id say its definitely nostalgia bias. AND if anything, the movie announcement in 2021 revived us. we had all given up on EVER getting a continuation since the last time any news about a new movie was all the way back in 2014. but then again…they went radio silent about the movie for 2 more years so we started losing hope AGAIN for a bit lmao. finally tho they dropped the actual trailer (and release date) in november 2023. dont mess with us madoka fans, we’re conditioned to expect failure and coped for a whole decade 🥲

Nakirium

i watch the anime at least once a year (its my #1 of all time) and even IM still learning new things (like all the references and inspirations and theories people create)

Nakirium

I like Madoka Magica but I feel like Heavenly Delusion will give them so much more to talk about. If Madoka wins I hope they jump into heavenly delusion right after as both are pretty short.

Daco

Of the three choices, I've only watched Heavenly Delusion. I only watch reactions to shows I've seen, but strangely enough, I'm hoping Heavenly Delusion loses. The first season was great, and I really enjoyed myself, but when I had to say goodbye after the final episode (or start the manga instead)... that really hurt. I'd hate for AutoSave to catch up when no Season 2 has been announced, so I'm holding off until we get an announcement.

Merfhew

If a new movie is coming out, wouldn't that mean recency bias applies to all 3 choices? I loved Heavenly Delusion, but until we get a Season 2 announcement, I hope they'll watch other shows. My vote went to Madoka, but as I've never watched it (and don't have time to start now), I won't be tuning in for their reactions. Of course, if I eventually get around to watching the series on my own, maybe that'll change.

Merfhew

Ikr. It would be so fun watching them react and discuss it. It's been years since I watched it and I still learn more every time I revisit it

TheMightyAnt

It's so great. Don't skip the op and Ed for the first 3 episodes or you'll miss out on something.

TheMightyAnt

Let's go Madoka!

Hibiki

I'm happy for you in the fact that you love Tengoku so much!

Matter

Most anime is. Most anime you may be interested in might not be.

Arakis

Most anime isn't concluded...

mohal

Even if Tengoku loses, please give it another try soon, I think you will absolutely love it, all I can say about it is that in most episodes my group watch stayed after watching the ep for 1-2 hours, going through the whole thing frame by frame, looking for clues.

nikum

It's not recency bias, I'd happily watch Tengoku again and again, while Madoka ... I watched it twice, it's enough, I don't care about it anymore.

nikum

I love the Madoka compilation movies, but they're poorly suited to AutoSave's discussion-heavy, speculation-heavy reaction format. By the end of the first movie, most of the big secrets of the setting have been revealed, and the only thing left to speculate on is "what are the characters going to *do* about this situation?"

Alex Jackson

it is exactly due to this that when I recommend Madoka to people i specifically tell them: Episodes 1-8, Movie 2, Movie 3. The Beginnings movie DID add a few things to further enhance the first 8 episodes BUT as Zillatain mentioned, it also REMOVED a lot too. Movie 2 (Eternal) is actually a PROPER retelling of the final 4 episodes while also enhancing it with more inclusive details. Of course its literally because the final 4 episodes is actually SHORTER in length than the Eternal movie while Beginnings is the exact opposite with the first 8 episodes.

Nakirium

I am very, very, much against them watching the first two movies instead of the series. The series is the original version. Yes the recap movies do have better animation and maybe a few minor additions, but they also cut out more than you think. There are certain important details that were cut, that seemed very odd to me.

Zillatain

That's always a major problem whenever a reactor puts a newer series in a poll. It should be all one or the other. But I am also really hoping Madoka wins.

Zillatain

I actually made a splice of scenes from the movie into the TV series. It's basically the definitive edition (I was very careful and selective in my editing). If Madoka wins, I'm going to try my best to get them to watch it since it's easily the best way to consume the series.

Matter

Don't let recency bias win, y'all... keep Madoka on top. + A new movie is coming out for it this year (a direct sequel to the sequel), and today is the 13th anniversary of its first airing (as Nakirium said), so it must be fate, right? Right??

Matter

1. The show must be good (as judged by Me(TM)) 2. The show must not be mainly action-focused 3. The show must have less than ~80 episodes 4. The show must be concluded Bonus: Beware of FotM shows. Those are my four criteria for suggesting shows to people I trust can really watch and get into thinking critically and analyzing a piece of media. These are in hierarchical order. Madoka and Tengoku all fulfill the top 3 criteria. Tengoku is not concluded. Therefore I voted for Madoka. I'm not expecting everyone to share the same views as me (especially since above all else *I* must think a show is good, which is obviously a subjective thing) but I think I have a pretty rational system. :)

Arakis

Fellas, i bring to you another piece of conclusive evidence to vote for Madoka Magica: TODAY (January 7) marks the 13th anniversary of episode 1 airing in Japan! IS IT NOT ABSOLUTELY PERFECT TIMING? HAPPY ANNIVERSARY MADOKA MAGICA! ! !

Nakirium

I’ll watch Madoka for the first time if it’s picked, I’ve needed an excuse to start it already

Nick

Dont know if recency bias matter on this one madoka magica is in the lead i would of prefered heavenly delusion but ive heard madoka is really good ive just never watched it. Im sure you will enjoy ether of them.

Tyler

More than half of what they already watch hasn't concluded. That criteria leaves so little.

Aaron Griffin

Apothecary diaries is so much fun, i feel like it will be right up your alley

Hans Santoso

I honestly think Heavenly Delusion is right up your alley. So much to theorize and discuss, which plays into your strong suit. Madoka Magica is a fun watch, but I like seeing you guys really get into discussions about the world and themes, which Delusion just has much more of imo.

Jarren Jenkins

Well, we've obviously both watched it, so you'll probably agree: Going for the 3 movies would be the best decision of you wanted to offer the best quality to the audience. However going for the episodes is what reactors do because a drop in quality < 10 more episodes worth of easy content.

Arakis

lmao I wish

ElectricAnt

i think what OP meant was more that Madoka's 12 episode anime was THOUGHT to be the end. And it would've been satisfactory as such. Then REBELLION changed our perception and for 10 years we accepted it as the new ending and were okay with it. NOW, we're all hyped and excited for the NEW next "ending" that could potentially remain as is for many years to come. Madoka not having a "source material" to wait for further updates leaves the fans under the assumption that the series is over now. There is no "manga" or "light novel" to adapt from. The anime+movies ARE the original source material. There's no way fans could ever REALLY know if Madoka will get future updates until a new animation gets confirmed. (and even then, we can't trust that because Madoka: Concept Movie was released in 2014-2015 and look where that went. Literally radio silent for 8 years.) Whereas Heavenly Delusions is 100% an adaptation that people can read ahead so SOME people already know that there is a potential future adaptation. OP is right to say that if there was to ever be a S2 of Heavenly Delusions, it can't be for several years due to having to wait for roughly 2-3 more volumes to release before trying to adapt it again. (unless you'd like a season with filler episodes like how Boruto/One Piece do things to avoid surpassing their respective mangas).

Nakirium

Crazy Armin gives his seal of approval.

Tempered Glasses

Discussions about Madoka Magica, one of my absolute favourites, would be fantastic.

xcllnt_313

You really can't go wrong with any of these. I voted for Heavenly Delusion but I hope you react to all of them at some point.

ADD Theater

I already said that there's a sequel movie, however, both the series and the single sequel movie are satisfactory stopping points, unlike Heavenly Delusion. As for the which is best, that's subjective.

Arakis

Heavenly Delusion is seriously a masterpiece, the manga too. It goes on my list of best Anime/Manga of all time.

Tramp

i'll always support Apothecary Diaries.

Fleur Nightingale

Madoka is not finished either and nowhere near as good as Tengoku

ElectricAnt

Some great picks! I recommend Tengoku for sure! It's really short!

godUsoland

sadly i dont think they'll be diving into the comments sections themselves and most likely moderators will be the ones actually viewing our comments. I definitely think they'll dive into the 12 episodes+Rebellion as it's how most (if not all) people initially dive into Madoka. Most people who even hear about Madoka having 3 movies still gets tripped up over whether or not they need to watch Beginnings+Eternal after the initial 12. OF COURSE if it were me personally recommending a friend irl or something i'd tell them to do 1-8 > Eternal > Rebellion but i dont think they'd be able to properly assess that type of schedule with everything else they're reacting to without some compromises. (also they tend to react to shows as blind as possible, even not know how many episodes a show even has until they reach the ending. usually the mods are the ones who updates them when they are nearing the end about whether a continuation exists or not, mostly from us comments)

Nakirium

IMPORTANT: With regards to Madoka, will you be watching the TV series or the 2 movies? Because the 2 movies are almost 1:1 adaptation of the series but 1. Much better visually and acoustically, because they put more money into them and 2. Zero filler scenes. Heavenly Delusion is good, but not as good as Madoka. Plus, I am 100% AGAINST starting up something that hasn't concluded. The manga is only 9 volumes long and this 1st season only covers 6 so it will be years before the story continues. Madoka, on the other hand, has finished. Even with the sequel movie and the upcoming sequel movie, all of the three are actually stopping points with self-contained storylines and nothing missing.

Arakis

All three of them are a must watch, I'd say. You literally can't go wrong with any of them

VidaWinter

the way they do their early access is MADE for Madoka. i wholeheartedly agree and would be so excited to see their immediate reaction switch-up in one day.

Nakirium

Tengoku literally cured my cancer. I was blind but now I can see. Also Kiruko cute

ElectricAnt

all 3 are on my list to watch -- happy with anything, but lately all i do is jump from one hype train show to the next, so going back and exploring something weird and dark like madoka (according to peoples descriptions) sounds more interesting rn

Morgan Vh

Great shows, I love Tengoku, but Madoka is so hype right now, also getting the first 3 episodes of Madoka with early access would be phenomenal.

Vartic

Delusions is going to win probably. I'll vote Madoka anyways.

HaruhiDream

Literally cannot lose in this poll I am so happy, only if all three could be reacted to 🙃

Max Bretl

Wild poll results here. Heavenly Delusion is the obvious choice but I don't know if they're making a second season or not - I picked up the manga because it was so great, though

Aaron Griffin

Please consider Classroom of the Elite!

Bakhtiar Rahim

Alright Madoka fans, we've been WAITING for AutoSave to give this show a chance. LET'S GOOOOO.

Nakirium

I love MaoMao but she can wait a bit, Tengoku supremacy!!!

nikum
