VINLAND SAGA 2x7: "Iron Fist Ketil" // Reaction and Discussion

tbf they're not "necessary" to watch as in you don't need to watch them to understand the story. I discovered them after watching S2 and it didn't impact my viewing of S2. But they are indeed a nice "gift" from Mappa.

"The thing" is a sort of governing assembly in early Nordic societie, made up of the free people of the community presided over by a lawspeaker. Things took place at regular intervals, usually at prominent places that were accessible by travel. They provided legislative functions, as well as being social events and opportunities for trade. In modern usage, the meaning of this word in English and other languages has shifted to mean not just an assemblage of some sort but simply an object of any sort.

As I have already mentioned in the comments of a previous episode: Please someone tell them that they should watch the .5 episodes on YouTube. The first one, which they should have watched prior to this episode, is called "VINLAND SAGA SEASON2 episode 6.5 "Drowning in the Shadow". The second one is called "VINLAND SAGA SEASON 2 Episode 18.5 "Same old story" and should be watched before episode 19. They are necessary to watch, as they are additional or cut content, that they couldn't fit into the actual episodes. Thank you.

Ketil is such a well-written character, especially upon rewatch. While the warrior past may be a lie, I do think we are meant to think of Thors in that moment, because Ketil does serve as somewhat of a counterpoint. He's another older leader figure whose value system does not match that of the world around him. But there's a huge difference in how they handle the resulting conflict. Beating the children is the "right" thing to do according to this society, just like returning Halfdan's slave in the first episode. But the difference is Thors stands up to Halfdan and does everything in his power just to make sure the slave dies peacefully, whereas Ketil reluctantly beats the kids. There are other factors of course, but ultimately Ketil is controlled by fear in a way Thors wasn't.

I just wanted to tell you since every reactor gets confused. The "Thing" was not meant to be something that was being concealed. It was very directly telling you where Ketil was. It's just not a modern usage of the word. In early Germanic culture the "Thing" was a meeting to discuss issues. Some synonyms are folkmoot, assembly, or tribal council. They were not emergency meetings. Rather they were regularly scheduled times where all the local freemen would gather. Since communication was so slow these meetings were the only times when you could reliably get a message out to everyone. They typically happened twice a year. At the "Thing" any attendee could bring up any topic. It was a place where people talked about anyTHING on their minds. It's the origin of the modern day word that you likely already know. If you had a surplus of something and wanted to sell it you'd bring it up and ask if anyone wanted to buy. If you had a issue with thieves you'd bring it up so that local landowners could work together to catch the thieves. If you had runaway slaves you'd bring it up so that local landowners could be on the lookout for you. And if you thought that a war was imminent you'd want to talk to your countrymen so that you could stand together against any invasion. It additionally served as a place where disputes could be settled peacefully instead of going to war over. It was an open forum where people went to discuss the news and make plans to work together for mutual gain. Someone in Ketil's position would be almost required to go. As probably one of the wealthiest people around he'd be a person of great importance at the "Thing".

"Thing" is an assembly where people gather to talk about laws and other general stuff pertaining to the local community.

Almost at a monumental episode for the series. It will be great to see their reaction to it
