Small detail: Askeladd being awake early in the season when Thorfinn tried to kill him is attributed to Askeladd killing his father in his sleep.

Vinland Saga aside from its other themes has a lot to say about fatherhood (biological or adoptive) in general. Thors, Askeladd, Ragnar, and Sweyn being prime examples this arc.

The stark contrast in Askeladd losing his only friend moments before the fight and Thorfinn losing his father ten years prior, but Askeladd is the less emotional person is wild. Askeladd's emotional control is really what gives him separation from a majority of the other "Vikings" in the series. There is always a reason behind what he does, and he rarely if ever flies off the handle or is overwhelmed by emotion. Even when he desperately hates someone.

Askeladd being the other father for thorfinn besides thors is always great to see.
