How Should we watch Steins;Gate?

Construction outside of our house right now, so our recording window is limited.  Should still be out tomorrow, or Saturday at the latest. :)

Comments

The dub for Steins;Gate is an amazing *localization* of the original material. I think a few people saying jokes won’t make sense or saying it somehow won’t fit is because they assume the dub will essentially ‘read the subtitles out loud’ but this is not the case at all because of the unusual amount of care and detail they put in to localize it. An unprecedented thing regarding this dub, is that the protagonist’s VA is also the script writer - Steins;Gate has the most natural dialogue I have ever seen because of this. I really think this English adaptation is something special. I’m usually a big advocate for sub, but I think this is *the* exception.

Karlsson

I personally think the dub is very VERY good, but Steins Gate have loads of references to Japanese culture, the sub just fit more... (and Okabe's engrish just too good)

Recha Recha

I understand Sub love, but Steins: Gate, FMAB, and Death Note have goated Dubs

StrawHatRimuru

No wrong answer here so whichever you choose I am down for.

Brrmaster

Definitely sub. Main character is voiced by the same guy as pandoras actor and Light, enough said

Albertan Motorcyclist

Sub all the way. If it was anyone else I might recommend the dub, but you two are extremely attentive and I doubt you'd miss anything due to reading. Dub is fine but some cultural moments and themes simply don't make sense or aren't as good in English. Some things are just very Japanese.

Hollow

The dub is honestly one of the best dubs in anime, so I highly recommend to give it a chance

Khal Wadege

I really do agree. I'm mostly a sub person as well but the Dub is just so well done. But I don't think it will win.

rogueknight

People voting sub have not watched it in dub, I watched both. I almost never watch dubs, but this one is better than the subs

LordFifth

Oh that’s fair, I’m only talking of steins gate as is. I’ve not watched the second season and from what you said sub seems like a way to go. Also seems like you’ve seen the dub of the first season and still prefer sub so it’s down to preference at this point. So by all means, go with sub. I just feel like the dub version deserves consideration from people who have not seen it as it was done really well and shouldn’t be lumped together with the mediocre dub of most other series.

Paing

Another thing is the second season, if they choose to continue it, there are literal americans, which emphasizes moreso the language thing. Idk, to be fair, im fine with dub winning. I just very much prefer sub.

Joshua

I really like the dub, but there's one moment in particular where you'll want the sub. I went with sub on this one for that reason. Both are fantastic honestly.

David Portnov

I suppose it could be mistaken as such, one point I can’t deny though is that the sonnuvabitch bitch joke land a lot better in sub. Sub wins for that encounter.

Paing

@Jonathan yes, she's one of my favorite voice actresses! ♥️ For Mayuri of course and Chiaki from SDR2

Meg B

Either is fine. I'm a sub type of person but Steins; Gate is one of the few (more in recent years) that does dub pretty well.

Bun

EXACTLY.

Joshua

Fair point. There is however 1 specific scene in mind that really didnt hold up. Going to slight spoilers, for anyone who hasnt seen it, but the alley way scene made Okabe sound a tad bit racist in the dub, and it just didnt land. Instead of struggling to speak english and trying sound cool, it made him look like a biggot who spoke Jive because the guy was black.

Joshua

Haha I was waiting until someone was going to reference that!

Russell Gambardella

I would argue that half the people here that are voting for sub have not watched steins gate in dub, and is blindly voting just based off the “sub vs dub” and “dub cringe” mentality, which is true for most series. But steins gate in particular has a really good dub and the delivery itself is fantastic with the improvised jokes flowing better than the original Japanese ones. As someone who have enjoyed the series in both sub and dub, dub is a clear winner. If you’ve watched the series in dub or both sub and dub, and thinks the sub is better, then by all means go with sub. But otherwise, I urge you to at least consider the dub version and not go with the “dub vs sub” mentality for Steins gate.

Paing

With this being the most important vote in the history of mankind to date, I must do my part in ensuring the sub wins!

Russell Gambardella

I'm just here for HanaKana

Jonathan

The dub for this show is genuinely fantastic and is one of the only English dubs in existence that I feel really and truly avoids a lot of the awkward phrasing and lazy localization that most dubs employ nowadays. However. The sub is still the correct answer for one simple reason: "sonnuvabitch."

Jonathan

Some of the jokes and lines really only make sense in japanese

Cat_Sidhe

Also, just my opinion, but I do feel like a lot of ppl prefer dub just because is a lot more convenient to watch the reactions without having to read, which is understandable. But at the end of the day you guys are the ones experiencing for the first time, so I think we should always recommend the highest quality version rather than the easy way for us. There's exceptions obviously, like Cyberpunk dub which is as good as the japanese one.

Carlos Soto

As for the “no, ewwww”, please come up with actual reasons.

Paing

The dub is solid, nothing wrong with it, but I'll always default to the sub

Rope Snake

The delivery of the dub is that much better and it conveys more in a confusing series like this with the dub. As for the language barrier jokes, I would say the improvised jokes by the dub team is funnier as someone who has watched the series in both sub and dub.

Paing

The dub is stronger overall in this one but I'll respect the sub win in the poll here and appreciate that it was put to a vote.

DennisAnimeFan

It's sub for this one, guys. The dub quality is great and is on par with the sub., but there are multiple moments when the language barrier is the joke. Just for that fact, they'll miss out on some things when watching dub

Joshua

This one has to be in sub

mpk258

Sub 100%, considering how iconic the seiyus are.

Carlos Soto

Sub team cause Mamoru Miyano is brilliant

Meg B

Why though? The dub is great, but the sub is just as good. And they'll miss some jokes about the language barrier.

Joshua

no, ewwww

nikum

Dub all the way

Paing
