Soon I'll Be There...
Added 2020-06-05 19:12:44 +0000 UTCI wrote the lyrics to "Caro's Song" as a writing exercise for a character in one of my campaigns. Caro the bard (an NPC I designed) had been searching for his missing lover Roeywen for years, traveling each week to the Shrine of Vela (Goddess of Knowledge) and tossing in a gold coin in exchange for some information. He was attempting to narrow down his lover's location by asking one question at a time. When the players in my campaign met Caro, he had exhausted every location he could think of, but the players suggested he ask the Goddess whether Roewyn was in Evenfall, the plane of light and shadow that few on the material plane had even heard of. Sure enough, that's where Roewyn was, and Caro quickly befriended the party, hoping they'd be his ticket to Evenfall.
That's the background of the song: Caro is searching endlessly for his lover, and now he actually knows how to find him. It's a bit sad knowing how much of his life he wasted searching, but now there's a bit of hopefulness that he can live out his remaining years with his beloved.
My partner Clare really liked these lyrics I wrote, so I suggested that she sing this version for all of you. I offer some simple backing vocals toward the end, but this is by and large a Clare Grall solo, and the first track we've recorded together (!) despite 3.5 years of dating. If you like it, please let me know, and I'll be sure to drag her into my studio more often.
