Cabo Verde

I've been really pleased to see how much people have seemed to enjoy the latest video of my presentation in Helsinki. I'm not totally comfortable doing public speaking but I think I'm improving!

This is a photo that I wanted to include in the slideshow, but didn't. Most people who have been at sea have photos like this, but this one brings back special memories for me. This was taken just before sunrise, approaching the Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of West Africa. I'd spend about a week at sea alone, sailing from the Canaries, and it had been the first long passage I'd done solo using only astro-navigation... so I was relieved to find these islands where I had hoped they would appear!

The photo was taken around the time I was first able to smell the land - always a strange experience after being at sea for a while - and it brings back memories of how I felt that morning: tired, salty, but exhilarated and eager to step ashore in a new place.

I came across this while I was cleaning out the thousands of emails and messages. Your growth as a sailor has been remarkable. Astros navigation worked for thousands of years throughout the world but due to modern charts and electronic navigation it's become a lost art. Yes, there are classes on it. But (IMO) YOU mastered it. Well done Leo.

Leo, There will be more like this to come! We will all be on deck with you as you experience each new adventure. Many of us have been with you from the beginning, and we look forward to the fun part of your, (ours) and your crew's lives together!

How exciting!
