Many of you will know ZoeyRaven as the Walkthrough writer for Dreams of Reality. He is also responsible for creating mods for several different games. Recently Zoey has moved into developing his own visual novel, One Day at a Time.
With the release of his latest update (Chapter 4c), I want to share with you why I enjoy playing this game and why I think you would also enjoy it.
At its core One Day at a Time is the story about two recovering drug addicts. Sounds like a simple premise, but it is so much more than that. Their struggle with addiction and subsequent recovery is entirely in your hands as the player. Your actions and choices guide both the MC and Lydia (who is the second half of the addicted duo) through the events both turbulent and rewarding that life throws at them.
Although the action is focused primarily on the MC and Lydia, they are joined by a host of others, for example the friends-with-benefits Mary, and the curios Barb, who herself seems to have a prior history with the MC.
A scene that stands out for me is the interactions the MC has when attending his first recovery meeting. There is a speaker who goes into detail about his life and his road to recovery and it really hits home – this is a strong and powerful message.
Zoey really knows how to pull on your heartstrings. As the MC you watch as someone you come to care about loses themselves to the rabbit hole of drugs and addiction. The choices around this character show that, no matter how pure your intent, or how you may want to stop them, sometimes people are unable to be helped. I know a little of what is to come for that character, and although it is a rollercoaster, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
The writing is compelling, and the dynamic between Lydia and the MC is incredibly entertaining. While the MC will hold no punches, Lydia will give just as good as she gets – and this breathes realism into the story, something sorely lacking from many AVN’s.
Zoey was new to Daz studio, but hit the ground running and every update since has been even better than the one before. Zoey knows what makes a good image and has developed a unique and distinct art style.
There is another side to this, Zoey himself has been recovering from addiction and this is his story to tell. His experiences add a raw element to the story-writing that bring a fresh level of truth to what you read on the screen. Recovering from any sort of addiction is not an easy task, but that is why we take things One Day at a Time.
