You asked about the magic in this world when the man with the beard started to cast a spell at around 47 minutes. His name is "Mousesack" and he is the court Druid/Magician and is the same man from the 1st episode who held back the invading forces with a barrier for as long as he could. But that was several years later. In Role-Playing terms there are "pure magic users" such as Sorcerers and Druids who get magic from the forces of Chaos/Nature, and Priests who claim to get it from Gods. Children who show signs of being able to channel this force are collected by Mage guilds or others to be taught how to use it. Witchers are not pure magic users, but they have been trained to use "Signs" which require precise hand movements and the focus of will for them to work. They drink potions to temporarily increase their "casting power." In the games it is very enjoyable to level-up these different Signs and watch monsters attacks bouncing off of the shield that surrounds you, or to throw them back to give you time to get in a better attack position.

As to where other stuff fits in - we'll get there. Yennifer gave up her chance to have kids in order to gain her looks and power - and like many of us - she is now having regrets, as she wants to have kids.
