A little historical background. Mel Gibson's character is based off of a historical person from the Revolutionary War called "the Swamp Fox" who caused Cornwallis a great deal of trouble in South Carolina. Tavington is based off of Lord Tarleton who was a cavelry officer & known for being particularly brutal. He went back to England an English hero, became a member of Parliament, & voted/worked with the pro slavery forces against the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.
