Superman Returns did indeed come out earlier than this. It came out in 2006 and this episode aired in early 2010. Brandon Routh is awesome. I love this episode (and I really like the one before this as well). The fact that Captain Awesome isn't actually awesome at absolutely everything is great. He's human, like everyone else. He sucks at lying and is clearly not cut out for the life that Chuck has now embraced. I also love how he's looking up to Chuck and trusts Chuck essentially with his life. It's just great. There isn't a single show on earth (that i've seen) that references pop culture more and better than this one. It doesn't matter if it's LotR, Star Wars, Fight Club, Die Hard or The Godfather. It's always done with love and appreciation. I'm happy you keep digging this show! The music this episode was top notch as well.
