So, Stefan is dead and we're trying to figure out what to do. We see him watching from the other side and suddenly, he's pulled away. He grabs onto a column and holds on for dear life. And then, Lexi shows up and saves him. So at least the two of them have each other. They spend most of it wandering around looking for Alaric.
Damon meets up with Bonnie and is furious that she let the one person who could help them with the spell go. She tries to explain that she didn't let her go. She was blinked out of existence. Thankfully, Enzo shows up with a new plan. We still need to find someone to tell us how to do the spell, and Enzo thinks he has that covered.
We've also got a kill a shit ton of Travelers. So, Liz (who I think I called Kim in the reaction) lures them to the bar with the promise of free booze. Under said bar, lies a gas line which Matt and Jeremy plan to break so gas will leak into the bar at 7pm.
But, we still need a witch. So, Elena and Caroline hunt down Liv and Luke and ask them to help do the spell. They refuse. So Caroline kills Luke (with literal zero fuss, I might add). Now Liv has the motivation to do the spell since it will bring Luke back to life.
Turns out, our person who knows the spell is Silas. So that's fun. He's only helping so he can get out of the other side as well. Obviously. Silas is not going to do anything out of the goodness of his heart.
The last piece is to actually set the fuse. And Damon has volunteered. Elena immediately forbids him and he tells her that he's made his choice and she has to respect it. He promises it will be fine. Yes, he'll die, but then he'll just come back with all the others. She hates this idea, but concedes it's his idea. However, right before he takes off, Elena hops in next to him and tells him it's her choice to come along and he's got to respect it. He does and they speed (literally as fast as the car can go, I think) into the side of the bar which causes an explosion.
Most of the Travelers seem to be dead and are making their way towards Bonnie to get to the other side. Elena and Damon show up and Bonnie tells them to go back to their dead bodies and get back to her as soon as they can. They do this pretty quickly, but Damon discovers Liz is trapped, so he stops to help her, and Alaric stops to help him. They send Elena back to Bonnie and Damon and Alaric work on Liz.
The rest of us, Stefan, Luke, Enzo, Tyler, Lexi (and maybe some others, I can't remember now) gather to get ready to come back. They want to start, but Stefan insists we wait for the others. Luke, just goes through and sees how difficult the spell is for Liv and begs her to stop. However, she claims she gave her word and is going to see it through.
Enzo doesn't want to wait any longer, so he comes through. I think maybe Tyler comes next (Who is no longer a hybrid by the way. I think he's just human now?) Stefan and Lexi are next and Bonnie tries to get them through, but they want to wait. Elena shows up and also wants to wait, but Bonnie grabs her and shoves her through. Then she coughs and doubles over and Stefan grabs her to make sure she's okay and that causes him to pass over as well.
Lexi, realizing that this is killing Bonnie, refuses to pass through and make her worse. But then Markos shows up and Lexi is like, fuck you. You don't get to pass. And she fights him until he gets sucked into oblivion. And she she manages to find peace and is somewhere permanent (I think). Damon and Alaric finally show up and Alaric heads through. Once Damon is assured that Elena is already through, Bonnie reaches for him, but nothing happens.
On the side of the living, Luke cannot stand by watch what this is doing to Liv anymore, so he does his own spell and forces her to stop. Just before Damon tried to come through, trapping him and Bonnie on the other side.
Elena is desperate to find Liv so they can get Damon back, but she's nowhere to be found. And Bonnie also tells her it's over. They can't do the spell again. And she's just screaming and sobbing (and I was too, so no judgment). Bonnie wanders off so Damon, who is here (but, you know, on the other side) can say his goodbyes.
And it's heart and gut wrenching. She can't stop crying and he's so calm. He's just so damn happy that he managed to find her to love. And that she loved him. He feels like he got everything he ever wanted or needed in the world because she loved him. It was so sad.
We end with Damon and Bonnie on the other side, holding hands, getting ready to get sucked into oblivion. Everything goes white, and S5 is over.
Fuck, this finale was good. Even though this season wasn't the best, this episode almost made up for it.
