I've Had It With David Sconce & The Mortician

Well, another episode of HBO's The Mortician has dropped and it's.... sorta the same as the first one. A Groundhog Day of funeral malfeasance.

Did you enjoy how this guy cremated 15 bodies at once in Episode One? How about 200 bodies at once in Episode Two?! That's so many more bodies! (But I hope you didn't want more context for Sconce's mindset or place within the funeral industry because you're not getting that.)

Since the doc's not doing it, let's talk here about why we DON'T cremate 200 people at once. What are the historical, cultural, and psychological reasons that come to mind for you? If your opinion is, respectfully, I think we SHOULD be allowing that to happen (with family consent), that is also welcome.

This documentary is not want I personally wanted, but is anyone else having fun? I feel like I made some of you watch this womp womp.

I don’t believe he killed Tim Waters, because if he did, why wouldn’t he have invited him to the funeral home, knocked him out and put him straight in the cremator? He has the perfect tools to make someone go missing, and he would have been depraved enough to do that, anyone think similar or have any opinions on that?

This is an issue that is charged. Enough so that if you take a pet to the vet for disposal they will ask you to specify if you are ok with a group cremation. The cultural mores are absolutely at the center of this. I am not watching it but glad to hear your take, as always! Personally I want to see us move from cremation for ecological reasons and if a family member requested cremation, given the option, I would absolutely approve a group cremation. For MYSELF. The ethics violation here is absolutely the broken social contract between the company and the client.

I don't know is anyone outside of SoCal knows this, but the building that was the Lamb Funeral Home has now been turned into an event space and escape room. Yuck. https://www.missingatthemortuary.com/

I think at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what any of us thinks should happen to our bodies after death, his company/family abused peoples trust - people expected their loved one’s bodies to be taken care of, and they were desecrated instead, it’s like going under anaesthetics at the hospital and not knowing if you’re being treated kindly

big stretch

Thank you for everything girl im specifically referencing the driving analogy (that was a real-life experience)

I believe businesses should provide the services they said they would. That's it.

I love this kind of content, so I am going to watch it every time. That said, I have a pretty relaxed view when it comes to a dead body...but not everyone does. So you cannot just tell people you are doing one thing, and then do another. That is bullshit. It would be a mind-shift to have the option to cremate as a group, but as long as you know that is what is happening, and you pay differently for it - I think that is an ok thing. But this dude? All levels of ICK.

Spoiler: the scheming for organ and eye harvesting was the worst, and max didn’t really explain how all that worked and anything about the receiving institutions potential knowledge. Also, Sconce’s mother bought the funeral business from her father according to max.

I confess, I watched the third episode. What a horrible person, from a horrible family.

I am not watching the HBO series, but my initial thoughts on this are: - I don't see an issue, PERSONALLY, with being part of a larger group being disposed of in a more green method - but I would have consented to that. Different from this situation - This sort of mass disposal hits very close to home with horrific events where mass graves have been dug, and thus has a VERY different undertone/tone/overtone from my above point. The first thing I think of when confronted with the idea of unconsenting people being disposed of in large groups is things like auschwitz, the black plague, genocide, war crimes etc.

Thank you for the self-reflection part, because I almost said the same thing. The thing is, the context of your original video was also enough to fill my cup…the only major difference is that your framing, starting with that thumbnail was “this guy is the worst” not “this guy is a fascinating sociopath”, so when people mentioned the show and then I found out who it was talking t about I was like “Oh yeah! That guy. He sucks.” So by virtue of the brand that comes with your channel, assuming folks have that context for you, they know you aren’t being exploitative. The third episode was interesting though. Very much so those rollercoaster documentaries HBO does so well.
