I felt very stupid not being about to figure out why Callie might be going to Mexico. In hindsight, I could think of lots of things, but in the moment I had no idea. I knew it wasn't to get an abortion, but couldn't guess what for. That said, hang gliding would not have made the list.
Okay, so Callie wakes Brandon up in the middle of the night telling him she needs his help, but giving him no details other than they need his car. She drives them to Mexico because she wants to do something that illegal in CA without parental consent. Right around this time, back at home, Stef finds a pregnancy test box in the trash and we're supposed to think Callie is on her way to Mexico for an abortion.
It was easy to assume that was a red herring. Callie hasn't had sex in a while. Plus, abortion is legal in CA without parental consent (at least I thought it was, and Stef confirmed that later on). But, I could not figure out what she was doing. Turns out, she dragged Brandon to Mexico so they could go hang gliding. She claims it is the first time she's ever really been free and she wants to do something crazy with her best friend that will give them a good story.
Initially, Brandon is pretty against this, but Callie talks him into it pretty easily. However, the people who are running this don't really speak English and it seems like Brandon speaks a tiny amount of Spanish, however Callie speaks none. So, there are definitely some miscommunications happening. When they are all strapped in and ready to go, Callie and Brandon think they should change their minds. They are planning to get out, when the cops show up. The guys running this flee and Callie and Brandon jump off the cliff.
They love it and are so happy they did it. Until, the cops show up when they land. They try to explain they didn't know it was illegal, but the cops don't care. Turns out, they want a bribe to let them go. Callie gives them all the money she has, but it's not enough. So, Brandon hands over his keyboard.
Later, on the way back home, they realize they don't have passports to get out of the country. And Brandon finally sort of explodes, blaming Callie for this, and all the crazy women in his life for all his other problems. Callie bites back that all his problems are his own fault. They sort of get over it eventually, and Callie manages to talk their way back into the states.
At home, the find out the pregnancy test was Mariana's. But, this is after Mariana told Lena that she never had sex with Mat. So they are confused. And then she has to confess that she did have sex with Wyatt though. They were safe, but she was still concerned so she took a test. And Stef makes her feel like shit about it. Stef, come on. I'm always defending your parenting (since I'm not defending your relationship with Lena) don't make the only good thing you do, bad.
Mariana retreats to her room where Lena and Stef come to find her. Stef apologizes and Mariana tells them that why she broke up with Mat. She couldn't tell him what she did. And she's worried about what to say to Callie. I think the advice of telling her that sex is fine if it makes you happy, but it doesn't seem to be making Mariana happy right now, is good advice.
Also, during all this, Stef has yet again made a decision without Lena; this time about the contractor. And of course they are busy fighting about it. Lena demands they go to couple's therapy, which Stef is immediately defensive of. However, when the contractor overhears them fighting all day, he asks for payment for the rest of the job upfront, claiming that when couples split up, it's much harder for him to get paid. That seemed to get Stef's ass in gear and she agrees to therapy. But she still seems super dismissive of it, like she is to most of Lena's suggestions.
A.J. spent the day on a ride along with Mike, while looking for his brother. They get some good leads, but then he gets called to a crime. He tells A.J. to stay in the car, but he doesn't and one of the other cops tosses him on the ground and cuffs him thinking he's one of the criminals because he a young, Black man. Mike steps in almost immediately and fixes it, but A.J. is still upset. (I mean, he has every right to be). Somehow, Mike manages to get through to him and tells him that he deserves a chance to have a good life without stereotyping him, and Mike is gonna try his damndest to give it to him.
Oh, and it looks like Brandon is getting back into the program. Guy who he thought double crossed him showed up at the house telling him that his pianist is willing to work with Brandon as well. Too bad he traded his keyboard in exchange for not ending up in a Mexican prison.
