Good afternoon my sweet poodles,
It is I, Caitlin.
There is a new YouTube main channel documentary making its way into the world in the next few weeks– but I couldn't leave you all hanging. (Spoiler: like the New England whalers left the Inuit hanging after they removed all their sources of food through brutal slaughter.)
This tale of walrus destruction was not quite long enough to create a full documentary on, but gosh if it doesn't pack a dreary punch. It's got it all: bowhead whales, walruses, whale ships, rapacious capitalism, near extinction, etc.
Please, cuddle your emotional support sea mammal before clicking Play.
What has Caitlin been up to, you ask?
I attended and spoke at the first ever human composting conference in Denver, Colorado. It was wild to spend time with my composting crew and see how far the idea has come. But- it makes one (by one, I mean me) aware of how far we still have to go. Yes, we legalized the process in huge states like California and New York, but those states may end up being easy compared to states where Catholics and Funeral Directors (the two groups most likely to oppose the legalization bills) have the most institutional power.
The same goes for our other good buddy, water cremation, fighting for legalization as well!
Legalization is taking a surprising amount of my time, but it feels like vital and urgent work, and I'm privileged to be involved.
In April I will be heading out to give a talk at Humanities North Dakota, but if you’re one of the few people who don’t plan to spend April in Fargo, you can join virtually.
Onward!
xo
