Okay, so I'm feeling fairly confident this is a backdoor pilot for The Originals. And I'm not mad about it. Also, the sound track for this episode was spectacular.
Hayley shows up in New Orleans looking for information about her family. A bar tender eventually gives her directions to a place where some people might be able to help her. However, once she gets out there, everything goes wrong and she ends up accosted by some witches who think she might be the key to them dealing with Klaus.
For reasons I cannot remember, Klaus also heads down to New Orleans to talk to some witch about people who might be plotting against him. However, the witches will not talk to him because they all answer to Marcel. So, Klaus heads out to find Marcel, and when it does we find out that Klaus was sort of his mentor. Klaus basically built New Orleans and then when he left, Marcel took over. He brings Klaus to the witch in question, but before Klaus can question her, Marcel kills her. Klaus is none to happy about this, but Marcel promises to help him find the info he wants.
Marcel is having Klaus tailed (which he's not happy about) and Klaus gets them to leave. However, they start to harass the sister of the witch Marcel killed earlier. But, a vampire shows up to save her. And we find out, it's not Klaus, but Elijah, who is here as well.
Elijah gets Klaus to come meet up with some witches who inform him that they are planning to overthrow Marcel. Klaus doesn't really want anything to do with this, but they they produce Hayley, who is pregnant with Klaus' child. Vampires can't procreate, but werewolves can. The witches think this is their ace in the hole, but Klaus tells him to tell her and the child, he doesn't care.
However, later on, Klaus admits to Elijah that Marcel has all the things he wants. Family, loyalty, power. Klaus wants to be a king. Elijah convinces him that they should stay here, in their home and retake their rightful places as rulers (essentially) of New Orleans. He also tries to convinces Rebekah to come with them, but she refuses; stating she still wants to be human. Katherine tells Elijah that Klaus is just gonna screw him over and it's a bad idea. The two of them can leave together and start a new life. But, he wishes her well and leaves her in Mystic Falls.
And speaking of Mystic Falls, the brothers are busy trying to starve the humanity back into Elena. So far, it doesn't seem to be working. At the end of the episode, Damon feeds her some blood with vervain in it hoping she'll feel upset and betrayed, but no dice. She eventually calls the boys' bluff and says she can last longer than they can, and the three of them lock themselves into the cell together.
