My Visit to Recompose: A Behind the Scenes Peek

Hello Deathlings!

The best part about shooting these documentary-style videos is that I get to really hunker down with a story and live with it. With that, comes a chance to really spend time with any people we interview. And when that person is already a dear friend, even better!

The Recompose-human composting video is obviously near and dear to my heart but hanging with Katrina Spade in her element, alongside her life's work (so far) was just too much fun. Not to mention that we got to meet Elliot Rasenick who was DEFINITELY in his element at Bells Mountain – that was an unexpected delight!

Here's a little behind the scenes peek!

Here's "Professional YouTube Caitlin" attempting to capture a thumbnail picture for our editor. Professional Katrina is helping.

Best nap ever. It's an interesting point in your life when you realize how many of your friends have "cared for your corpse".

"Not your fault that it was weird, it just was." – Katrina making me feel better that the serene act of putting wood chips over my eyes was in fact not comforting, but kind of nightmarish instead.

SHE RISES!

Demeter, goddess of the harvest.

Recompose is very much a busy, working facility. An interesting intersection between the gentle, profound rituals they hold space for and the very practical technology and machinery that make it all possible.

I like to imagine that Elliot's office hours are just him perched on this rock communing with nature.

For the record, the Elliot you see in the video is 100% authentic Elliot – and we love it. This is a man who runs a nonprofit, is steward to conservation land, is caregiver to the soil donated by Recompose families, and apparently never wears shoes. He is a joy.

Thank you for your support Patrons! Especially now, as we work on these bigger videos, we feel such responsibility and such privilege to be putting your pledges to work creating educational content. THANK YOU.

Onward!

Caitlin

Recompose is the most beautiful deathway I've ever seen.
