Greetings Deathlings,
Feast your ears on another episode of Death in the Afternoon! This week we offer you: Maggots Holding High Carnival.
The American Civil War left roughly 700,000 men dead and an entire nation devastated. With millions of pounds of rotting human flesh on the battlefields, burying the dead was a daunting, sometimes insurmountable task for the survivors. Bad when it was burying your fallen brethren, worse when it was burying the bodies of your enemy, unimaginable when it was burying the men who fought to keep you enslaved.
We could easily spend an entire season on death and the Civil War as there is so much to unpack here. Over the years we've covered small aspects of it, from the Confederate Camel,, to the impact and legacy of the first photographs depicting the casualties of the war, to a vampire (well, sort of).
In my segment I talk a bit about the smell of war, which can be overwhelming and distracting. The U.S. military has even looked into incorporating smells into virtual reality training for soldiers, in hopes of preparing them for the smell of war.
With Memorial Day coming up next month, we hope you'll take a moment to remember the community behind the Martyrs of the Racecourse, and maybe even have your own a picnic in your local cemetery, just as they once did.
But this week of content isn't over yet! Still on deck we have a new article on The Order website coming out this Saturday the 27th. And but one short week later, on Saturday May 4th, we have a new video for you, shot at a grand location you might remember from a favorite movie...BUT I'VE SAID TOO MUCH.
Smell you later deathlings,
Caitlin
