Depressing, perhaps. But NECESSARY. You have been asking for us to talk about Saartjie Baartman for quite awhile. We waited because the Iconic Corpse series tends to have a whimsical edge, and Baartman's story is.... not whimsical. Not even sorta whimsical. But it is fascinating, historically important, and something people should be aware of.
I'm on a plane as I write this, heading from Salt Lake City to Madison. I spent 4 days at the National Funeral Directors Convention and boy. It was.... something. I'm not sure yet whether I should make a video about it, write about it. There is much to unpack. I heard about 100 times at the conference "I love what you're doing even though all my colleagues hate you." It was incredible to do a book event last night and be surrounded by people who support the movement and not hear about how everyone hates me for a sec ;) A palate cleanser, if you will.
I hope you enjoy this video. I'm especially proud of all the research our editor Landis did with historical photos to bring the story to life.
Yours at 36,000 feet,
Caitlin
