My favorite nonfiction reading (favorite reading period, really) has always been the man faces death (and often loses) in extreme conditions. That's why I love Everest, the Amazon, the open sea, and now, the Arctic. There's something about facing death head on, the ego you need, the desire to conquer, and how some triumph and some are pitifully punished.
Today we're exploring the 129 members of the Franklin Expedition to find the Northwest Passage. They all died, but most people believe they didn't have to. They had food, they had water. WHAT HAPPENED?
