We Were the Lucky Ones 1X5: Ilha Das Flores

So somehow, Mila doesn't end up getting shot as she runs for the soldier near the wagon. She offers him her wedding ring to let her get on, which he allows. (Also, this soldier looked about 12 and scared out of his mind). Eventually, the wagon brings them back home. So, they lost the money for the transport and her wedding ring, but both she and Felicia are alive.

Halina, Jakob, and Bella survey the damage outside of their hiding spot as they head over to Jakob's apartment. It's not great. Just lots of dead bodies piled up in the street, empty buildings, nazi signs, and general destruction. Bella is looking for her sister and brother-in-law, but isn't able to find them. Unfortunately, they find a note that says, 'They're taking us, I think they mean to kill us.' (I'm paraphrasing, but it's pretty close). Bella breaks down, refusing to believe that her sister is dead.

Shortly after this, they make the decision that it's time to go back to Radom. They need to bring their family their false papers, and it's no longer safe in Lvov. Bella is refusing to go, claiming she needs to stay and look for Daniel and Ana, but Halina convinces her it's right decision. However, Halina then gets word of a rumor that a master forger was at a work camp nearby. She decides that she needs to stay and figure out how to get him out. Jakob is not pleased, but they wish each other well.

Halina show up at the camp with newly forged documents claiming her husband has been rounded up with Jews accidentally and she's here to collect him. She shows both their forged documents and offers some silver, and later that night, he gets released. They declare their love and move to Warsaw, telling the family that they are ready to accept them as soon as they get there.

Meanwhile, Genek and Herta (along with the others) are released from the work camp and sent to fight for the Polish army. It seems like we might finally have some hope. The Polish soldiers are kind when they board the train handing out food and water. But when it's time to join up, they don't want Jewish soldiers. Herta is pissed and starts yelling at Genek to just figure out how to get into the service. He ends up meeting with a man and asks him to teach him to be Catholic. Either way, this is much better than where they were. At least so far.

Addy and Eliska have made it to Brazil, but not Rio, as their visas are all expired now. Addy tries to talk his way out of it, but to no avail. Eliska is having a bit of a break down and she and Addy end up fighting. In all honestly, I'm surprised everyone is not fighting with everyone all the damn time. Tensions are so high and people are wound so tightly, how they aren't just exploding at each other all the time is a miracle.

Anyway, Addy finds out that Rio is no longer taking Jews as they are considered undesirable. He mopes about it a bit, but then Eliska finds him and tells him they are going to Rio. They are the last of the Jews they are taking and then it's closed boarders to them. Addy is not happy, which I get, but I also get Eliska, at this point, take any victory you can find. Live to fight another day and hope the day exists when you wake up.

They get to Rio and find Eliska's uncle. She offers Addy a place with them and he tells her he'll just get a hotel. When she asks if he has money, he lies and says he does. But he's been using all his money to bride people and get stuff he needs that he's fresh out. Thankfully, someone asks him if he has a place to stay and when he says no, invites him to their Rosh Hashanah.

I don't know what year we're in now, but it seems much too early to feel hopeful.
