I'm sorry. How was this not a season finale? How is this just a random episode at the beginning of the season? WTF. This episode was better than it had any right to be.
So, Klaus finds Elena pretty much immediately and assumes that her being alive is the reason none of his hybrids are working. But, before killing her, he decides to make sure that's the real reason. When he said this, I was confused, I was like, why do you care, just kill her anyway? But he waits for confirmation, which apparently was the correct decision, as he needs to feed her blood to his hybrids. Apparently, the witch who set the spell hated Klaus so she lied about the doppelgänger dying so he would kill her and not be able to make hybrids. Pretty smart. It sucks that Klaus is smarter though.
Anyway, Damon and Katherine (well Damon unknowingly) kidnap Jeremy. They know he can talk to the dead and they need him to talk to Anna to find out how to kill Klaus. Turns out, she knows about Michael, the vampire hunter who was after them in the 20s.
Armed with this info, Damon heads back to Mystic Falls and confronts Klaus with it. Basically, just the mention of his name sends he and Rebekah heading for the hills.
However, while he getting this info, Klaus manages to compel Stefan for good, and he's back to his old ways. For real this time. Not like he's been faking it recently.
Klaus sets up Elena in a hospital to draw her blood so he's got it for the hybrids. Damon unhooks her (and noticeably doesn't really even flinch at her blood) and carries her back to the boarding house. Once there, he promises her he'll never leave her again (this all happened while he was wandering around with Katherine- but they did get some useful info, so I feel like it was wroth it). Just then, Stefan comes in (you know, as evil Stefan, the way more fun to watch Stefan) and tells them Klaus is gone for now, but he'll be making sure nothing happens to Elena.
Oh, and just to make this even more suspenseful, Klaus uses Tyler as his new hybrid experiment. But after he gets Elena's blood he seems fine. I have no idea if he'll continue to be fine, but right now, all seems okay. I don't know if this means he'll be forced to do Klaus' bidding in the future, but I'm currently cautiously optimistic.
