Elena is seventeen and Stefan was seventeen as human when he was turned (Damon was turned when he was 24). Vampires are eternal and age became relative, they tent to be stuck at the age they were turned. Stefan is actracted to humanity, he wants to find someone that makes him feel human again, and Elena is perfect looks like Katherine (that is what initially draw him in) but is not her, as he explain to Lexi and when he is with her he forget who he is. The problem is not the age gap, is the witholding information that makes him look like a master manipulator, he doesn't tell her anything, unless he is forced to. He should have tell her about her resemblance with Katherine BEFORE they slept together and there is more.... Damon now knows that there are other vampires around and that there is another way to enter in the tomb. There are a lot of supernatural creatures in this universe.
