My god this was a bleak episode. If we take out all the Alex and Chase stuff, though, I really enjoyed it. We did not need them. I guess I'm supposed to be rooting for them, but I'm not, really. I mostly just feel indifferent about them. Plus, I was kind of annoyed at them because so much else (that was REALLY important) was happening in this episode and they kept pulling focus.
So, anyway, Brooke finds out that the her mom's way of keeping the company means, she basically just took all the investor's money. After a particularly unpleasant run in with one of these investors who told Brooke that now his kid couldn't go to college, she visits Victoria at the jail. And Victoria has the balls to be like, 'Why are you upset? It was either us or them. Do you really think we should personally pay everyone back?' And a totally on brand response of 'Yes, of course,' from Brooke shocks her mother.
After going over the numbers, she realizes that the only way to repay everyone is to liquidate the company and use the cash to pay them back. Which, effectively means, she's losing the company. Julian tells her she's doing the right thing, but it's still difficult for her. Especially since NONE OF THIS IS HER FAULT! She didn't even know it was happening. However, after meeting with her accountant, he informs her that even after that, she only has enough to pay back 70%, and she decides to throw in all her personal assets as well. Meaning, everyone gets paid back, but now she has, literally, nothing. Ugh. My heart aches for her.
While this is going on, Nathan is still home spending a lot of his time hanging out with Clay in the hospital. Clay keeps telling him he's got to go to camp, but Nathan keeps telling him this is where he needs to be. After swinging by the beach house to pick up stuff for Quinn (and seeing the aftermath of the shooting) he goes to Tric for a drink and runs into Julian, who tells him that Jamie likes baseball. In this moment, Nathan decides to retire. He wants to make sure he leaves the game while he's still healthy enough to do things like play baseball with his son (which he just found out he did) before he really destroys his back.
Once he gets home, he tells Haley this decision, and asks if she's okay with it. He tells her that their style of life will probably have to change, but he really wants to be around for her, Jamie, and the baby. Haley seems really happy about this decision. So, I'm really happy about it. But, I know Nathan is probably gonna struggle a bit at first. After this, Nathan goes back to the beach house to start cleaning up all the blood so Clay and Quinn don't have to go home to that.
And we've got a third of the episode watching Alex and Chase go golfing. I mean, I guess we needed some levity based on what else was going on, but I was kind of annoyed every time we cut to them.
