Hello Mega.
Thank you for another awesome reaction.
Season 2 here we go. So much information in this episode, so many things happened.
For me, Finch stole this episode, the first flashbacks where we focus on how the machine was built specifically, not just how it was delivered to the government.
Starting at the beginning we see how the machine communicates with Finch. Very subtle like Reese mentioned. The Machine uses to communicate social security numbers through the Dewey Decimal System which correlates with numbers on books in Finch's library. The words themselves are individual codes leading Reese to the correct books: the title keyword and the initials of the writer. With three books side-by-side, the numbers form the social security number of the person of interest.
Leon is a funny character, really like his interactions with Reese, and we get to meet Bear, really liked your reaction to him.
Carter and Lionel are great once again. Really like how Lionel was offended when Reese said he only had one friend.
Now you can see that the government is also looking into Alicia's death, sending one of their operatives to deal with the evidence and Reese. I don't know if you noticed, but you can briefly see him pass Carter in the police station, just as she was on the phone with Reese saying someone conveniently destroyed the evidence that Alicia had on her when she died.
And now Root. A very intriguing character indeed. She is looking for the machine to set it free as she mentioned. The implications remain to be seen.
Now you mentioned that she has an intriguing line about muzzling and giving the machine to corrupt people, which is true to a point, but it was the best thing Finch can do at the time. And as it is implied in season 1, the people have used the machine to stop terrorist attacks and Finch couldn't do that by himself, so he had to trust someone. Sadly there are always bad apples in every organisation.
At the end of the episode we see Root's search ending by finding a government worker, Denton Weeks, which is the same guy that appeared on the flashback in season 1, 'super' along with Alicia, talking with Nathan about the sell of the machine for 1 us dollar. We'll see what she can get out of him.
Anyway great fantastic season opener. Can't wait to watch the second episode.

Contingency- Yay!!! I was so excited when you posted this reaction for the first episode of season two!!! I love this episode! It's definitely one of my favorites within season two. And you've now met Bear. He's so cute!!! I love how happy you were to see Reese whistle for Bear to come with him. :)
I absolutely love Reese all throughout this episode, and I love that he finally admits to Lionel that he sees him as a friend. Even though while Reese never acted like he cared for or respected Fusco before, I know it's nothing more than just a tough act. Reese doesn't trust or let people in easily, so I understand why he has struggled to trust Lionel up until this point. But I do believe he does now.
I also love how hard Reese is fighting to save Finch. I love that he tells the Machine he has to find Finch, because he owes him for saving his life. Thankfully, he is eventually able to convince the Machine to help him save Finch in spite of its training and rules that Finch gave to him, after refusing to take any steps further towards helping anyone like Finch would want him to do... having proved to the Machine that he's willing to die to save and protect Finch. Absolutely love this about Reese. It says a lot about his character. He's a fierce friend, willing to sacrifice everything including his own life to protect those he especially cares about, as well as everyone else.
Oh... And I love Reese's fight against the really big gang member, and seeing him get himself badly beaten up by the brute until Carter and Lionel arrive to save him. As Carter saves him. I love the humor between Reese and the brute when Reese demands that he try fighting some his own size... or rather someone closer to his own size. I also love the banter between Reese and Fusco too, when Fusco teases Reese about enjoying watching him get beaten to hell for once.
As for Root... she's a fabulous character, and she's also all kinds of crazy. She certainly makes for a very dangerous antagonist. I love her because she's so mysterious and she makes you excited to see just what it is she's going to do next. And Amy Acker plays Root brilliantly!
Next... I really enjoy the flashbacks with Finch teaching the Machine. It is all very clever. I'm so excited that we're beginning to see that the Machine is more and more a character in its own right. Because it absolutely is.
As for the scene when the Machine saves Finch from being hit by the driver drunk and asleep at the wheel... Finch is angry because the Machine only fought to protect him by convincing him not to cross in that moment, but it didn't alert him about the man driving in time to try to help him, or any innocent bystanders who might have been around and in harm's way as well. And I really love how this is Finch's reasoning for the Machine initially refusing to help Reese to find him, until now.
Both Fusco and Carter are also great in this episode too. Like always. I love seeing them working on the same side now, with Reese to save Finch. They all make a great team. And now Bear has joined with Reese too. I love this dog so much! And that Reese speaks Dutch to turn Bear against his former owners. :)
And lastly... I absolutely love the overall storyline with Reese being Finch's contingency plan should something happen to him, which is why the Machine sends him to save Leon instead. Leon is hilarious and I love Reese's and Fusco's interactions with him.
Thank you again, Mega! I can't wait for more Person of Interest. Until the next episode...
Sincerely,
Heidi
