One Tree Hill 7X8: I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight

Okay, so while this isn't really the episode i wanted, it was actually really fun. After all the Naley stress of the last few episodes, all I wanted was for them to be enjoying each other peacefully. But we got an entire episode where they didn't even interact with each other! But getting to watch Haley be high might have been worth it. 🀣

So, we split up in this episode. The boys (minus Clay) go camping, and the girls have some pot brownies at home. The camping stuff is fine, but the girls at home is a much more fun storyline.

Out in the woods, Jamie is too scared to do a zip line, so Julian pretends that's he's scared too. Then, later, Nathan pretends to be too scared for something else just to make Jamie feel better. I love how much everyone loves Jamie. It should be overkill, but it's not. However, I can so do without Chuck. He's the kind of kid in a show I hate. And it doesn't help that his character is meant to be annoying. Anyway, while out camping, Skills and Mouth both get career advice that they seem excited about. Skills wants to do some kind of basketball coordination thing, and Mouth is just gonna put his sports stuff online.

Back at home, Haley is a hungry stoner, who is excited about everything (but mostly food); Brooke is paranoid; and Quinn didn't actually eat any. She did call up a psychic that came over so Brooke to ask about Julian. Although, she told the psychic everything she already knew. But, she did hit the nail on the head with Quinn and Clay. Leaving Haley and Brooke to deal with a bunny, she heads over to Clay's house.

Initially, he tells her to leave, but after dead Sara talks to him some more, he chases her down and tells her the truth. That he's here because his wife died, and no one, not even Nathan knows. I know that Sara was trying to push him to get together with Quinn, but I don't know. It might be a little to soon for that.

And we also get some Dan and Rachel stuff, as well. We find out that Rachel paid a family to take their kid off life support so Dan could get his heart. Dan is having some hallucinations about the kids. (Also, do we think he did actually get that heart in Mexico? Or is he just imagining that in his dreams? Was this really a back alley operation?) Either way, they've decided that now is the perfect time to come back to Tree Hill.

Love this camping episode, for a filler one, it's such a good time. Of course, I would have loved to see an entire Naley centered episode as well Dana, hehe, after the whole Renee storyline. Could you imagine if we could have gotten a high Naley together at home, just cutting up together, letting go of their inhibitions, and just having a grand ole time, hehe. How fabulous would that have been, hehe. Sign me up for any day of the week to watch that one, lol!!! But since they needed a bridge between stories, this episode worked well for the gang. High Haley is the best, and yes.... Joy loved filming those scenes Dana. If you couldn't tell, she had a blast, and Joy does her best work when she just throws herself into her character and just really goes for it, so getting to step out of the typical Haley demeanor was a blast for her. And she played it so well. I laugh so hard at Haley climbing all over the kitchen counter to eat more of her leftovers that she cooked, then complimenting her own cooking, hehe. Only wish Naley would have been high together having the same reactions, lol. And yes.... the girls were so much more fun and intriguing than the guys, lol, but it was nice and funny seeing Nathan and Julian bonding for the first time because they are such vastly different people and certainly wouldn't be in each other's orbits if it wasn't for Haley and Brooke, but that's what makes it work. And Julian was the one who understood that Jamie was afraid to go ziplining, but didn't want to disappoint his father, and Nathan pointing out to Julian that he has good instincts where children are concerned so he has nothing to worry about when the time comes, was such a nice moment between the two of them. And yes...Chuck is annoying as hell, lol, and doesn't seem like the type of kid that Jamie would be friends with at all, but I think the show was trying to go with another generation of a Nathan/Tim dynamic in featuring Jamie/Chuck. And since Jackson and Michael became good friends in real life, they kept Chuck around. And I also really love Clay and ghost Sara, hehe. That dynamic just really works together, and even though Sara is only present to convince Clay to deal with his feelings and try to move forward with his life and let Quinn in, I really enjoy his talks with Sara, and always found myself wanting more of them!!! And we find out in this episode how Dan got his heart, and why he's haunted by it. Dan and Rachel continue to be fun and creepy together, lol, and there are more twists and turns to come, hehe.

Yes....this episode is so much fun for what it was. It's definitely one to watch over and over again when you need a good laugh and just want to smile a bunch, hehe. High Haley is a trip all by herself, lol, and Nathan and Julian spending time together for the first time is comical as well because they are such different people and if it wasn't for Haley and Brooke, they wouldn't be in each other's orbits at all.... which is what makes them endearing, hehe. Plus, it's really such a great change of pace from last season to see a group of friends in a situation together that really works. Something S7 really got right, was the cohesiveness of the gang. Especially as time goes on.... this group really works well together!!!

Melissa

Is it any surprise that Nathan would be my favorite male character and Haley is my favorite female character, and the two of them together in Naley trumps everything, hehe. Not a coincidence is it, lol. But there are also some amazing platonic friendships and relationships on this show that have always worked so well....and OG Lucas and Haley, and Brooke and Haley are two to name a few, as well as Lucas and Nathan eventually, lol, but Nathan and Clay are great, and become really special, and it's something to be admired with a newer dynamic. The show got lucky there, as it's really believable, and the two of them are root worthy as best friends!!!!

Melissa

I too love that Nathan keeps his close circle small...it's very in character for him and he's always been like that since Haley. I too feel like Haley is his overall best friend, with Clay being his best guy friend, and that relationship only gets better and stronger with time, and it's great to see. Nathan outgrew Tim pretty quickly in high school , and aside from his relationship with his brother (who he eventual grew close with) Lucas wasn't Nathan's BFF by any means and certainly wasn't his confidant or someone he went running to, so it's very refreshing indeed to see Nathan have an adult friendship that seems very real, natural, and genuine, because like you said, with Nathan's job that takes him all over the country, and the family man that he is....he doesn't really have time for or need to keep up with a lot of people, so having those few close people in his life outside of his wife and child, is definitely all that he needs!!!!

Melissa

Ugh. If I think about it more there are a few. I love OG Haley and Lucas. And I love eventual Nathan and Lucas. But also Naley aside, Haley and Nathan are amazing together. I'm with you. Haley is my favorite character. I've loved her since the pilot. And she's just gotten better.

Dana Licciardello

I can 100% see that. It feels like a good episode to put on when I've had a couple glasses of wine and need to make dinner. It's going to be one of those that I binge a lot. Not super important to the story, but easy to watch my friends hang out for 40 minutes.

Dana Licciardello

I like Quinn and Clay together

C. J. Ramirez

This is one of my favorite episodes of this show. I rewatch it more than almost any other episode. I think it is just that I love filler episodes and love seeing them all getting to have fun and bond without dealing with any intense drama. I miss filler episodes in how TV is made now. It creates the best character moments

sandrinegeller

This was not a slight on Nathan or his friendships. I like that Nathan keeps his circle small. It makes sense for him.

Sabrina

Well he's not very vulnerable with people. He himself says that in the therapy session in season 5. The most vulnerable he is, is with Haley. But there's also more to a friendship then laying your heart completely bare. I agree he's not the closest with a lot of his friends but I would say that Haley and Clay are the exceptions to that. For one, I think he can be a little bit vulnerable with Clay but there's also other aspects to a close friendship that we see later with Clay so I won't mention them for spoiler reasons and all. That's why I love that they added Clay because prior to that (aside from Haley) his closest friend was his brother and it's so nice to see Nathan have a guy who is a BFF.

Elsa Reinsch

Nathan is friends with different people, but he doesn't really have meaningful close relationships with any of them. I always felt that this was in character for him though since he's been this way since season 1. Sure he will help and support his friends but it doesn't really go beyond that. He still doesn't really let people in.

Sabrina

I agree with Haley being Nathan's bff. Nathan is very content with just his family and basketball.

Sabrina

With Nathan I've always felt like his best friend is Haley. Definitely Clay is his best guy friend. Nathan has a lot of friends but Haley and Clay are definitely the closest. The thing about Nathan is ever since his growth in season 1 he is a pretty accepting person. He's friends with a lot of different and a good friend to them but I feel like he's not someone who can give equal attention to everyone. Like he has his couple of best friends and he's good with that. You can bet that he will support the others if need be but with his job that takes him all over the country, his child, his wife, and his couple of best friends... he doesn't have time to give equal attention to everyone. I mean in terms of friends there was Tim, Haley, Mouth, Clay, Brooke, and Peyton to name only some. That's a pretty different group of people.

Elsa Reinsch

Tbh, Nathan doesn't really have close friendships. That's just not him. Haley, Lucas, Q and now kinda Clay (the Lucas stand in I guess). That's about it. Also, Nathan and Julian really don't have much in common. Nathan is someone who gravitates to someone with similar interests.

Sabrina

I like the development in Nathan and Julian's friendship from the beginning of this episode till the end. I'm not saying that they are BFFs by the end but they're closer. As to why Nathan has something against Julian... they haven't mentioned why clearly but remember that Nathan's brother hated Julian and then begrudgingly was fine with him but Nathan didn't know that. Really all Nathan knows of Julian is that he's the dude who came to town to make a movie and caused a lot of annoyance and trouble for his brother whom he loves. Also I think Nathan's been annoyed by some of his movie quoting tendencies and other stuff. As you mentioned they are two very different people and sometimes two different people can clash lol. I do want Nathan and Julian to be friends tho. BTW I don't know if forcing them on a camping trip was the best first hangout session idea. Maybe Haley and Brooke could have planned some double dates or game nights lol

Elsa Reinsch

Same. Though, despite my feelings for Lucas, Lucas and Haley were a very close second. One of the reasons why Haley is my favorite character on the show is her relationships with people... Nathan, Jamie, Brooke, Lucas, Peyton... She has a close relationship with everyone.

Sabrina

Me too! I love the progression here. Honestly, they might have my favorite platonic relationship in the whole show.

Dana Licciardello

I really do love Haley and Brooke's friendship.
