One Tree Hill 5X11: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side

YES! Brooke! I'm so proud of you! I loved this moment so much. You earned my help? Fuck you, lady. (You haven't earned the respect of being called mom). This was one of the few positive things that happened in this episode.

In shitty land, Dan's out of prison. And I'm petrified about him scaring the daylight out of poor Jamie who is already terrified of him even while he thinks he's in prison. And he's all gross and disgusting. When he walked out of jail he didn't seem relieved, he seemed ready to fuck up a bunch of lives.

Rachel stole the money Peyton repaid to Brooke (but Victoria was definitely the catalyst for that- god I hated that scene. I don't like having to root for Rachel, but Victoria was such a bitch, I am). And she was doing pretty well until that point. She dealt with Brooke not re-hiring her as a model, and Mouth rejecting her. But all it took was Victoria being her awful self to send her off the deep end. Sigh.

Luke and Lindsay lie to Nathan and Haley during their joint parties to get them together (but both already figured this was the plan), but at the end, it looks like Haley is giving up. She said she was sorry for trying to change him and she knew who he was was they got married so this is her fault. Ugh. It's rare I'm not team Haley, but right now I think she's reaching. It could be because I actually saw what happened with the 'kiss' and the shower incident, but more so, I think it's because we all saw Nathan change. Not just for Haley (although that was part of it) but he didn't want to be Dan. I don't think Haley forced him to change. Plus, we are very different people in our early to mid 20s than we are in our teens.

And, I don't know what the hell was in Lucas' book, but it made Haley call him in the middle of the night and tell him he can't marry Lindsay. This would happen when I was finally warming up to her. Lol. But seriously. I need to know if it was the book itself, or if whatever she read just made her relate it back to her and Nathan. Stupid show. I don't wanna wait to find out!

Oh...exactly!!!! Team Haley all the way here, lol. Like you said, I'm so glad that Haley finally gets to sit in her feelings and let Nathan stew on them for a bit. For once a simple apology isn't going to fix this, nor should it, and I'm so glad that this story arc isn't something that's just being brushed under the rug in one episode. It's really been developing all season long, which is one of the reasons why S5 has been a nice change of pace for Naley. They do the angst-ridden stuff so damn well, and it's nice to see a more realistic look at this family and what transpires when you put them through the ringer like this. As you said.... for the past 6 months Haley has been trying to move past Nathan's accident and his subsequent behavior, but all this Carrie stuff has brought back all her trauma of betrayal and distrust right back to the surface, and so here we are. I do hate to see them go through this, but I'm so glad that Haley gets to sort through it all on her timeline, without feeling external pressure to instantly forgive Nathan. The stakes are too high here, and Nathan if nothing else...owes her that.... time!!!!

I'm still team Haley. We're use to Haley just letting things slide and forgiving people within an episode. I'm glad she gets to sit in her feelings. They are valid. Nathan's behavior after his accident really surprised her. As much as he's tried not to be Dan, as soon as he lost basketball he became just like him, bitter and angry. He abandoned his family, his child. Basketball was more important. Sure he was there physically, but he checked out. Haley was raising Jamie by herself. She had to threaten to leave for him to open his eyes. Then Carrie happens. The stuff with her is just another blow. He didn't tell her about any of it. And now that she knows he's still not telling her why he didn't tell her. Who Nathan has been for the past 6 months is not the Nathan she knows. She doesn't trust him. This isn't something he can fix overnight. Haley is generally understanding, but she's disappointed in him and hurt right now. You can tell she never got over his behavior after the accident even though they were trying to move past it. Carrie didn't help matters. So here we are.

It's funny to see you finally come around and warm up to Lindsey, lol, didn't expect that, hehe. Michaela plays the part extremely well because I totally believe that where the characters are at right now, she's very good for Luke, hence why Lucas and Lindsey playing matchmaker for Naley in this episode completely works. And Nathan and Haley didn't mind....in fact they totally figured it out, lol. But that wasn't their problem anyways, it was all the other junk hanging in the way that came to a boiling point yet again in this episode. It was very sad seeing Jamie being caught in the middle of his parents very adult problems that he can't begin to understand, and it would have been great if both Nathan and Haley could have reassured him that they would have some family time later that night, whether it was playing rock band after the party was over, or tucking him into bed together that night...whatever the case was, Jamie needed to be reassured, but then we wouldn't have gotten the drama, lol. But having happy family time at the party when Haley's got a million other things on her mind...wasn't the time for that, and it would have been nice if Nathan would have stepped up for Jamie in that situation and tried to explain to him, instead of having to wait until the Nathan/Jamie bed scene at the end, but at least Nathan finally got around to telling his son that it's not his mom's fault...it's his. Baby steps, hehe. And speaking of Naley drama...I'm going to take a different stance on Haley's behavior here and defend her for a minute, lol, because I don't like the narrative that Haley is being too harsh on Nathan or whatever. I remember being so hot when this episode originally aired, lol, that it was coming across like Haley was being unreasonable here...and I absolutely hated it. It's lazy and crappy writing for this storyline in an arc where Nathan is completely at fault and Haley is the victim here, not the other way around. The drama queens podcast last year when the girls were doing this episode, so went off on the writing for Nathan here, lol, because he wasn't doing anything productive to explain things to Haley. All he said to her last week was "I wasn't into her", and then this week he said, "I'm sorry". That's not going to cut it Nathan. He's yet to have an honest conversation with Haley where he goes item by item and line by line of the incidents and explains how long this has been going on, why he let it slide, and why on earth he never said anything to her about it? Until he's willing to do that...he can't expect Haley to understand much let alone forgive him for this. And Skills should have been talking to Nathan....not just Haley. That always bugged me too, lol. We should have seen the gang telling Nathan to get his ass in gear and go save his marriage. He put his family in this situation, not Haley. And as much of a gut-punch as it was hearing Haley tell Nathan that she shouldn't have tried to change him and that she's the one that's sorry because she knew who he was when she married him, and now she's done trying....I think it's apathy setting in because she doesn't have the strength anymore to deal with his constant lying and hiding of things. Remember during her pregnancy with Jamie...Nathan almost got her, and Jamie killed because of his hiding things from her, then his accident and subsequent behavior earlier this season, and now this crap with the nanny. So, Haley is now resigned to the fact that this is who Nathan is...and it's who he's always going to be. She's finally like, that's it...I get it. It's actually such a heartbreaking omission, but one that a wife would make who feels completely defeated, and betrayed. Like I said...I completely understand her reactions here, and Nathan hasn't helped himself one bit. He's been way too passive and reactionary here in these past two episodes, so we'll see if he steps up his game moving forward and does the work to prove to his wife how sorry he is and how an utter lack in judgement about their marriage is something that won't ever happen again. So, stay tuned, hehe, and next episode is a big one. It's the 100th episode of the series...can't believe you're already there. Enjoy it...it's a fantastic episode!!!

Melissa
