One Tree Hill 4X16: You Call It Madness, But I Call It Love

I'm not sure if I'm still upset about the previous episode, but I was super snarky for a ton of this. I don't know if it was actually as bad as I claimed it was, or if I'm just salty. Lol.

There is zero chance that Luke knocks on the door and then just walks away.

Fake Derek would never hand over the knife to Peyton. (Although,I do wanna say that Peyton acting crazy was actually really good. I don't know what she's done after this show, but I hope she got some serial killer parts. Lol. I think she'd be good at it).

Mouth is not skipping finals to get on a plane with Rachel.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! (Just FYI: This is a quote from a movie I've never seen.)

As much as I don't really get why this girl would be sending messages to Dan, I can buy that Luke saw her in the window before he left the building. I'm wondering if we're gonna get some backstory about Dan doing something shitty to her in the past. Because why would she be doing this and not going to the cops? Do we know her?

I guess Brooke and Peyton are fine now. Almost killing a guy who who almost kills you will trauma bond you, I guess.

At least we got some nice Nathan and Haley moments.

I continue to love an adore all of your reactions Dana...both pre-episode recap and post-episode recap, hehe. So please keep it up. Secondly...I'm with you on the contrived drama crap (ala the sex tape and psycho Derek stuff) but let me just say that at this point in time on the show...you were beginning to see a jumping of the shark at times with certain plotlines and story arcs, but instead of it being a detriment to the show, it actually really worked in it's favor, lol. It ended up becoming something that OTH was sort of known for, and it really helped separate itself from most of the other teen genres it was competing against at the time. So as easy as it is to rag on the writing at times....and believe me, I do it plenty, lol, the writers definitely had their finger on the pulse with certain things, and how far they could push the envelope, and what would resonate with the fans and create a buzz whether it be good or bad. The whole point was to get people talking, and for the most part...OTH excelled at it. But thankfully yes...the sex tape is basically null and void. It served it's purpose, so it's basically done for. I like to pretend it doesn't exist anyways, lol, since we all know why it was an add on and not really part of the shows intended history...so I find that strategy works best for me, hehe. And you were funny with your repeated harping on Lucas for not just barging right into Peyton's house like he always does, lol, but for plot purposes, you know why that wasn't done. Plus, I'm glad you came around to Brooke and Peyton fighting off psycho Derek by themselves, instead of white and shining armor Lucas to the rescue. I much prefer this version. And the acting and all the stunts were spot on. It did play out like a horror movie, and like I said...it was the beginning of those jumping the shark moments that became a staple of the show. And I'm so glad you could appreciate the Naley moments in this episode. I knew you'd love the prediction reveal and learning what Nathan wrote last season, since after you watched 3x07, you screamed..."No, i don't want to wait a year" lol. And did you catch that both Nathan and Haley basically wrote the exact same thing? They were even in sync while separated, hehe. Haley originally wrote that her and Nahan would be together again, and Nathan wrote that they'd be together by graduation. And it didn't even come close to taking that long, lol. I think they were officially back together only a month or two after those predictions were made, but that's Naley for you, hehe!!! And you have seen the girl that was in the tutor center before. She was the one with diabetes that was in there with Naley and the other hostages that Jimmy held at gunpoint that day (Mouth, Skills, Marcus, and Rachel). So stay tuned because there's a lot coming down the pike with that story. And there are only 5 more episodes left this season (21 total), so we are fast approaching the end of S4....and there are a ton, and I do mean a ton of stuff that still has to play out and wrap up, lol....so these remaining episodes are most definitely jam-packed!!!!

Melissa

Also wanna say, when you find out who’s behind the blinds when Keith was shot…. You are gonna kick yourself in the head!! I was even standing on my bed like “Dana.. DANA OPEN YOUR EYES, you’re so right with most predictions”.. that’s why after I was like…ooofff, giirrrl… 😂😂😂

Jamie Sawyer

OMG. You're right! I didn't even think about it. I feel shame. I really do like Peyton. She and Lucas were my favorite characters in S1. But so much horrible shit has happened to her since then! I just need some happiness for our girl. Totally understand. I always thought of myself as loner in high school as well. But, as we now know, even if we think of ourselves as a loner, someone else thinks of us as the prom queen.

Dana Licciardello

Hahaha “Open your eyes Dana”!! So, I got touch on the Peyton and Brook thing for a minute.. “AGAIN lol” I see it as so many things can happen, but when somthing major like that happens to your best friend… it’s all out the window and I’m gonna save my best friend. “ side note* Brook is the only one, during Psyco Derek came about, that has not reached out to her. So Brook coming to save her in this was perfect! I’m sorry, I’m a Peyton Stan lol. In High school i had alot in common with this character! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Jamie Sawyer

Yeah. It's the 'woe is me,' BS that's really annoying me right now, You are not, in any way, entitled to sex. Ever. Even if a girl likes you. They are not obligated to do it, even if they might want to. Again, I was worried I was judging this too harshly because I'm much older than the characters, but maybe not? I had zero issue with his character in S1 and maybe S2 (I can't remember exactly), but I'm concerned about how I'll feel about him on re-watches.

Dana Licciardello

Yeah, it's hard for me to overlook, especially after what he did to Shelly and how he's now throwing himself a pity party because of it. No matter when this was written she said she didn't want to have sex. That was clear. Just like it was clear he pressured her into it. He's one of my least fav characters.

Heather

Totally agree. I don't think the writers meant him to be manipulative, but either way, he's totally coming off that way. Honestly, I think (at least at this point) I think I'm able to sort of overlook it because I think they really mean for him to be a nice guy (but they don't actually know what a nice guy is- which I think is a product of it's time). That said, I (and anyone else) could make a really convincing argument for why he's a shitty human being. But this is also coming from a 43 year old, who's lived life. If I were watching this as a 15 year old in 2008, I might see this very differently (which is a problem in itself, but still).

Dana Licciardello

I think where you were going with Mouth is that he's a hypocrite? He incessantly whines about wanting hot girls to give him a chance and not judge him based on first appearances, but he's all about appearances. Who they are on the inside is definitely not his top priority. He falls in love within 30 seconds of initially meeting a girl (Brooke, Erica, Rachel, Shelly). Despite maybe not being the most attractive guy, he feels like he's entitled to their affections or whatever he wants from them since he is the nice guy and throws himself a pity party when he doesn't get what he wants. I do not think Mouth was intentionally written to be manipulative, but it doesn't change the fact that he was. I'm pretty sure we're suppose to be sympathetic to Mouth, since they always have him crying and not once does he question himself. For me, I can't excuse his behavior based on the time he was written or the fact that the writer didn't see his behavior as toxic. Just because a writer is trying to sell me something doesn't mean I have to buy it. Mouth's character doesn't age well. He's very polarizing. Some people love him and buy into the nice guy image. Some people hate him and see right through it. I think it kind of depends on what you can overlook, but he's shown problematic tendencies for awhile.

Heather

Agreed! As I always say, 'Anything can happen in Tree Hill!'

Dana Licciardello

Very true that Tree Hill seems to just have an open door policy for everyone, which is insane, especially with all the crazy people around!

Amanda Q

I didn't remember her at all! She didn't even look slightly familiar to me. I'm not sure if that was on purpose (so I would forget about her), or I just suck at remembering things. Lol.

Dana Licciardello

We have seen this girl. That's Abby. She was one of the hostages in the tutor center. Jimmy let her go to get her insulin.

Sabrina

My only big issue, really, is that they never knock on doors in this show. They just walk right in. So, Luke, knocking, in general, seemed out of character. But you're right. This was set up in a previous scene. Oh, god, yes! Peyton not needing Lucas to be her knight in shining armor was very refreshing.

Dana Licciardello

I definitely think Lucas would have left. In the previous episode she tells him she isn't going to prom. He says he's going to come pick her up later and if she opens the door then they will have a great night, but if she doesn't answer then he will have his answer and he will go to prom alone. I like Brooke and Peyton being the ones to fight against fake Derek. It's nice to see Peyton saving herself with Brookes help without relying on Lucas.
