Outlander 1X6: The Garrison Commander
Added 2024-04-05 20:00:12 +0000 UTCFuck Randall. Am I right? I knew he wasn't to be trusted. I mean, I did read the book, so that's not saying much, but still. Lol. That said, though, the actor playing him does a good job of playing two distinctly different characters.
Also, it was so not enjoyable to watch him literally torture poor Jamie. But I think we get a wedding next episode so at least we've got that to look forward to. I need to watch Jamie do something positive after this episode.

2024-04-07 13:22:43 +0000 UTCThank you! I thought maybe I missed something that I should have known, but I didn't really. It was just Claire being like, let's get this over with so I can get the hell out of there. Lol. I'm not super knowledgeable about history, and it took me a while to realize that Randall was trying to get her to prove she was sympathetic towards the Scots, but once I did, I knew it was gonna be bad. Sigh. As much as it hurt to watch him torture Jamie, I think it was more disturbing watching him recall it. You're right. He got such a sick, twisted pleasure out of reliving the experience that it was hard to look at his face.

2024-04-07 02:26:21 +0000 UTCOn another note, even though Jamie said like 3 sentences in this episode, I loved him so much more after this. The strength it took, both mentally and physically to overcome this and to come out the other side so kind-hearted and good-natured, is truly moving.

2024-04-06 11:39:20 +0000 UTCI've only read the book once and it was awhile ago, but from what we see here, yes, I think there is a silent agreement between Claire and Black Jack to not mention their previous encounter in front of the other officers. Claire agreed because she just wants to go home. What he did won't matter in 1945. We vaguely hear her version of events to the officers, but most likely she omitted her encounter with Randall. She doesn't need him contradicting anything she's said or arousing suspicion. Randall agreed because he was setting her up. Black Jack knows nothing about Claire, just what he thinks he knows. (That's why he spent most of the episode trying to uncover her secrets and elicit her true story.) What he thinks he knows is that she's working with the Scots. Randall baits her into revealing her sympathies for the Scots. He gives her just enough rope to hang herself. By remarking to the English officers that perhaps Scotland belongs to the Scots and not to the King, she seals her fate. He was able to convey to the other officers what he wanted them to know about her and now what she knows about him doesn't matter. They leave her alone with Black Jack, probably knowing full well what they are leaving her to. The staredown was also setting up their showdown of manipulation and deception where Claire and Black Jack engage in a bluff game of sorts where they try to convince the other they are who they say they are. This was an amazing episode. I love character driven/revelatory episodes. Even if that character is Black Jack Randall. We get to see how truly evil and soulless Black Jack Randall is. There is no empathy. He only sees others as extensions of himself and a way to fulfill his needs. He is a sadist who loves evil for nothing more than its power, pain and pleasure. As he narrates his flogging of Jamie, an almost eroticized look crosses his face. What he says about the experience is truly revealing. Itβs evident that Randall is relishing every brutal moment of this retelling. I cried the first time I watched this. The combination of Jamie's pain and Randall's pleasure from it was hard to watch. I'm ready for some swooning too. π₯π
