VIDEO: How the British Government Used the Army Against Their Own Citizens

A note from the Story Producer:

Visiting Derry last year really inspired me to pitch this story. Going to a place really helps drive home how events like these can leave both mental and physical scars. And I love how the documents can help reveal the motivations of the government in this case -- that immediately after this massacre, they aren’t worried about justice, they aren’t worried about stability, they just want to make it all go away.

Oh boy, the comments on this will be fun, as they always are any time anyone mentions Northern Ireland on the internet. On a serious note, thank you for sharing this Johnny and team. As someone who grew up in our post conflict but still divided society telling this story and others is so vitally important - and that's coming from someone with a family of a unionist background - a family that realised what the state was doing and strived to achieve a equal and integrated society. If anyone wants some "further reading", the BBC has produced two incredible rather impartial documentaries: Once Upon a time in Northern Ireland, and Spotlight on the Troubles. Don't know if the latter is available still.

Peter Reid

Well done folks. We're still living with the fallout from Bloody Sunday and the utter failure of British foreign and domestic policy. And I say that as an Irish man living in the UK who wasn't even born in 1972. In 1998 the Good Friday Agreement really felt like a miracle. Only to be undone by the lunacy of Brexit 18 years later.
