I've tried and failed to cover this topic many times in previous recordings and video ideas so i'm really happy to finally get this one out there. π
Break Layering is just complex and i've always stuggle to make something that is concise and dosen't involve me swapping kick samples in and out for 10 minutes!
Even though there is a bit of science like tuning your drums fundemental frequency, it's still probably 90% trial and error. I highly doubt Paradox is looking at an analyse...

A couple of days ago, Alex (Human Synthetics) and I got on a late night zoom call & had an incredibly productive back and fourth discussing all our plans for the future. π
One of the problems we highlighted, is that even if we could help more people finish music & unlock their creative potential through our Patreon & YouTube channels. There was still the lack of an outlet for everyone to showcase their tracks.
There is nothing worse that spending hours and hours fi...

I mentioned it in the last chapter of this video but I'm cooking a massive 'Break Layering 101' project towards the end of this month. Then I think after that, it's time to move onto some new topics!
I really want to get going with the Arrangement Strategies videos, so that will be the focus next month alongside an upcoming feedback stream. Alex (Human Synthetics) & I are about to announce it next week.

As summer comes to an end, I thought I would wander into some Japanese pop and funk classics and see where I ended up!
This pack has a lovely, mellow kind of optimisim to it and will hopefully help inspire you guys for this last quater of the year. Lots of great record chops for slicing, lofi chords & vox. π
I've used Logic's stem splitter quite a bit to extract different elements & then lots of manual editing in Twisted Wave using fades, reversing, cut & paste etc...

If anyone missed it - here is a link to the Patreon post where you can download the Amen Break Swapping Instrument.

Break swapping is an amazingly powerful tool to make your drum work really stand out from the masses. However, as i'm sure many of your have realised, it's not as easy to implement as it seems. The processing, level balancing, drum groove, tuning and of course choice of breaks all have a massive impact on the final result.
One of my favourite ways to implement this is to swap breaks every 4 bars or so like this great tune by 2025-09-22 14:48:14 +0000 UTC

The Apache has certainly been the most difficult of these breaks to work with so far. The original has such a unique tone and can be processed in so many different ways. But it can be tricky to get the groove to roll properly & to deal with the room noise & reverb etc.
In the end I went for 3 variations of the main break. A classic Source Direct roller style like that track 2025-09-15 17:18:41 +0000 UTC

Arrangement Structure
Arrangement is one of the most overlooked aspects of music production both on YouTube and in online courses (myself included). Itβs just not as glamorous or exciting as exploring new techniques or getting a vibe going at the start of a track. Instead, it involves a lot of trial and error & is much harder to show in a short 7 minute video.
That being...

Just a quick video showing how I put together the Hotpants break instrument this month.
I'm not sure I was 100% clear but in the section at 6:48 when i'm talking about the two versions of the hotpants. You can program all the midi with the break + shuffles and then just select it all and pitch it up or down to either use the tambourine vs Lofi...

I'm really enjoying the process of spending an entire day focused on one break and turning a simple drum loop into one of these massive break instruments! Each break lends itself towards little adjustments in the processing & FX making and the Hotpants in no different.
One of the biggest gripes I have with this break is that shaker/tambourine element can get quite bright and annoying. There are a few ways you could tackle this, such as with a filter or EQ, but as usual I went down t...

For a while now I've been slowly thinking about the best way to build a Jungle Template for Renoise. I really want this to be a great starting point for anyone, not just beginners to see the potential of the DAW and how creative you can be with the native FX! π§¨
This entire template has been made with Native plugins in the newest version of Renoise 3.5.2.
The goal of this template is two fold:
This is an area that is without doubt the biggest problem most of us face in our journeys as music producers. As I write this, I can 100% guarantee that each and everyone one of you (me included) has a folder of 100s of unfinished ideas and tracks that will probably never see the light of day. Some of these tunes also have great potential, like beautiful sculptures that are left unfinished.
What is it that makes finishing music is so hard? What tools and strategies can I use to overcome...

This was a pretty relax video where I just turned the camera on and jammed out with a few samples. I think pretty much all of these were taken from packs I've given to the Professional Dj & Record Label Owner tier. π
It's such a great practise when you need a little inspiration. Dig around for 10-15 samples that fit within a similar style or theme. I often go for mystical & atmospheric sounds without too much dissonance but this is where you're own taste and style comes into ...

This month, I've continued to push the boat out and experiment further with the idea of making the ultimate break chooping instrument for each of these classic breaks.

After the blog post last week, I thought I would be a cool idea to show how I process breaks from start to finish. π₯·
This is essentially the template I use to take all breaks from their original tempo up to DnB speeds.
It involves:
- Pitching the break up/down into the Akai for crunch via sample rate reduction.
- Subtle clipping also by driving the 'rec level' in the Akai.
- Mono the break. Sometimes you need to pick the best side (L or R or Mix)

As Iβve been doing so much drum break work at the moment, with a forthcoming 90βs style breaks pack well under way, I thought this would be the perfect time to go over a bit of break processing.
This is a topic that can be very confusing, especially for beginners as there are so many tools that you can use & everyone has their own methods.
What I have done over the years is really simplify my process down to a few plugins and mostly hardware these days to get the job don...

I'm really excited to wrap up this mini Patreon series on making a track from scratch using the Echoes of Light Sample pack in Logic. π
I've deliberately left this one a bit loose to show the full process of arranging & lots of the trial and error that takes place.
Once you've got your 3 different 32 bar loop sections (Intro, A Part, B Part) most of the work from this point onwards is subtractive. Muting regions & testing out different placements is 90% of the work.

As much as I love break chopping and sampling records, thereβs one topic above all else that seems to attract the most interest on my channel and that is how to make atmospheric jungle pads. ποΈ
For a lot of these classic tracks, the pads are really the standout feature where much of the nostalgia & warmth come from. All the other elements need to wrap around this core harmonic layer and the magic is often found in the way the little melodic embellishments, drums & baselin...

Hello everyone,
Quite a relaxed video this time as I've been quite under the weather post run!
This video with be a 3 part series for Patreon going over my process for building out a track.
1. Creative ideas stage (First 1/2 hours of production).
2. Developing the initial idea and adding more depth and variation.
3. Stretching out the arrangement to a full track.
The main idea to this approach is to add a lot of depth to each of the main 16/32 bar section...

I watched all of these last night and thought it was super cool to see some of his workflow inside of Renoise! It's such a dope program & I love it get some exposure on RA π.
At 9:44, the technique Sully demonstrates for his breaks is well-known and is still probably the best way to achieve intricate break chopping, especially when working with multiple breaks or ones that have a lot of variations like in his track. Time-stretched hits, reverse hits, ping-pong loops, reverbed hit...
