If you want to shift the focus from land to people or professions, that might be interesting. The US kind of "stole" all of Europe's nuclear physicists, but that was only because of all the political turmoil that happened just prior to WWII, so many of them were happy to leave.

Latin America was firstly stolen by corrupt politicians and by people voting for populist leaders. It's the same situation in Eastern Europe and it's normal people are frustrated, I understand you. But trust me, the main blame should be directed towards the corruption which is endemic in the local societies, before accusing external influences. And even if you feel the American influence was such bad and it's the root of all evil in your country, I can tell you that in most of the Eastern Europe we would've been blessed to be under the American influence instead of the Soviet (Russian). Probably the same applies to those countries under the Chinese influence. There will always be super-powers in the world. I guess you just have to choose "the lesser evil". And I never wish you were under the Russian influence, ever.

I agree with your rationale Benjamin. Of course it's important to understand and acknowledge the imperialistic events of modern history where the European or Americans were at fault. There are already many efforts in the Western countries to educate the people and acknowledge on those mistakes of their past and not keep on hiding them in the history lessons. But on the other hand I am also bothered by the extreme fanaticism coming from the other side, from the "victims" of that imperialism. There are people in countries (formerly "colonized" by force) which are not governed well at present time despite the fact that the empires left and they are free to govern themselves alone. And such people are right to be frustrated because they are not living well, but instead of directing the blame towards the former empires and past events, they should better direct it towards their own governments in the present. We could also have a more cynical view about things: in that era of imperialism (colonialism, call it however), if you wouldn't end up under the European or American influence, you would've been anyway under the Russians or Chinese or other autocracy. I can tell you that at least the Westerners are making an attempt to acknowledge their past and released their former colonies, but you will never see this from the Russians or Chinese with their imperialistic views. This opinion comes from somebody whose country was under the Soviet influence. I cannot stress enough how bad that was, making the American imperialism look like a soft joke in comparison.

My area of knowledge and interest is in Middle East and in particular Iran. But since oil was found in middle east and specially end of world war I and creation of new Middle East, Great Britten, France and later America repeatedly stole democracies and made sure people have no say in power.

Not a direct suggestion, but there's this book called "The Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins that describes a more pessimistic aspect of World Trade loans and US corporate interest. While the claims are certainly questionable, it would be an interesting fact-check rabbit-hole topic.

Agreed. Especially when it comes to Brazil, everyone talks about the coup and the dictatorship as a homegrown movement but it wasn't. Another interesting story is how in the early 2010s Brazil wanted to increase the amount of Brazilian movies that a theater has to play in a year, and the US responded by threatening not to import oranges from Brazil… the whole idea of soft power might be an interesting topic! Back in WW2 Disney created Ze Carioca as a way (among many) to bring Brazil into the fold of the Allied powers, crazy stuff.

I agree Joao. I was mainly being facetious. But, to me, the ultimate whitewashing in 2023 is to focus in on how America/Europe stole everything, and put up blinders to the broader history. Johnny's done a pretty good job of contextualizing the past 200 years of imperialism as an extension of historical norms. But for me, when I speak to people about history, they have NO IDEA that people were violent and imperialistic for thousands of years before any europeans showed up. Again, mostly a glib joke.

I don't see how's that relevant to the modern world (I can be wrong). I understand where you come from, and I agree with you that people "used" to steal from each other, which is true but in my opinion, what makes these videos great is how they co relate those events with the current state of the world and helps me better understand it. Specially when there is some (or a lot) of whitewashing around those topics.
