Looking to revamp Patreon - What would you like?

Hi friends. I'm looking to relaunch the Patreon with some new offerings and I thought I'd ask those of you who have been here supporting the channel what types of things you'd be most interested in? Let me know and I'll keep you posted, really excited about this!

Looking to revamp Patreon - What would you like?

Comments

I would recommend Boone Loves Video on YouTube. He also has a Patreon.

Simon

I'd love to see a video on your research process.

Morris taylor

Where it would be the best place to learn animating maps with Geolayers? I recently bought the plugin but I didn't find a full course on that or full tutorial from beginner to advance. Any advices would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Alex

I would echo what Taylor said above. Learning opportunities about your process would b much appreciated.

Mohammad Shahhosseini

I would definitely love to see at least one in depth video on how one of you goabout editing your videos…finding music, SFX, b-roll (like how you find historical footage and news clips, etc.) and animation choices.

Taylor Finley

I’d love to see how the process for thumbnailing and coming up with titles goes. For instance: when / based on what do you decide if thumb + title = good?

Jurjen IJsseldijk

A few ideas on how to add more value to this Patreon group: Monthly Q&A videos are a super easy one for you. Debrief after each video — directors commentary type of thing. Any BTS content would be great: - Video topic selection - narrative / choosing an angle for the story - pieces of the project that didn't make it - how you collaborate with your team My #1 request would be that I'd LOVE some sort of masterclass on scriptwriting (or maybe that'll be your next bright trip class 🤞)

Paul Carleton

I wonder if there are English subtitles in the Visual Storytelling class. I asked a question by e-mail a long time ago, but I didn't Korean subtitles will be difficult for the new content, but I hope English subtitles will be included. I want to know the timeline of after effect. I think I can get motivation and inspiration from seeing many layers piled up. I wonder how to get old news videos, videos, and photos.

For BTS, I’m more interested in systems and methods and collaboration than “how to animate” stuff. Vlogs like “Here’s how we capture ideas” and “Here’s us debating on what idea makes it through” and “Here’s what my deep work blocks look like”. Also love the idea of “raffling” something from the video off to Patreon. Also like the idea of a team reaction or debrief video and extended cuts

+1

Ryan Shields

+1 for BTS vlogs

Ryan Shields

Extended interviews are great - I would prefer it be a little edited though. Maybe a special version on "why some topic get thrown out in the making process" or "topics that got in but get really debated for the team." (for higher paying Patreon, not me...)

Lisa M. J. T.

Biggest thing for me is BTS and process vids. What does research look like? How do you distill information into interesting story? How do you edit script or validate ideas? on so on

Chad Barnier

After each video, I'd love just an unstructured debrief with you & the teammates who helped drive it. How did you choose what narrative to focus on? Were their any parts you ended up cutting & why? What were some of your thoughts behind creative choices? As a fellow video maker, these are the sorts of things that make up great work, but that I rarely get a glimpse into outside of my own personal process.

David Mora

Oh I like that idea of long unedited interviews! Also: I don't mind paying for an adfree version of the video you post on YouTube. Depending on the price of course.

Randy

More map animation!! Or maybe a behind the scenes on your latest Ukraine video, how the maps were compiled and how the animation of a war timeline in maps was made

TheReal Mark

- Maybe add polls here where we can vote on the next idea - We already see the video on YouTube, and you send us the structure here already. How about film or start sending us the process of how you come up with the ideas and the research you do? - Behind the scenes of working on an idea. So we don't only see the end product (The structure and the video on YouTube) - but rather the research, the phone calls... - Discount for an online workshop on video journalism that happens once or twice a year

Ahmad

these are GREAT ideas - I love the idea of sending something from a video!

I think the best Patreon-ers are the ones that create a sense of community around it. My proposal: you already have a community built around YouTube/Instagram/etc. Treat Patreon as an inner circle where you can go for advice (or at least describe it that way publicly). Where you might do a poll on Instagram, also post here and ask. Then in the video, "I asked my community on Patreon, and they wanted to know more about...". Give the sense that this is somewhere to be involved in the channel (even if it's superficial). Or take a page from the Brady Haran playbook: send us random crap. At the end of a video "I'm going to randomly choose one of my patrons on Patreon and this map is going in the mail to them" (if you can bear to part with it). Or post extended cuts, or segments that got cut for time. Consider a Q&A with the people we don't see: editors and researchers. Screen capture the animation process and post a timelapse.

Current Free-In Description on Youtube, Reference Links of evidence $3-Cool Prints $6-Scripts-Show how you will present your data and material New $__-Evidence-The data and material you read, gathered, witnessed, collected, that shows the claims. ( I enjoy watching Youtubers, yourself, along with Real Enginering, SmarterEverday, CGP Grey, RealLifeLore, Economics Explained, etc. and taking your word as fact[with the given biased of ones own position]. I would pay more money to enter side by side with you on how you drew your conclusion. -You could possibly create a Discord Server for a central location to Communicate with members

Orion

that's a great idea!

Johnny Harris

Q&A videos where only Patreon subscribers can submit the questions. This would create a great feedback loop because in each video you get to plug the Patreon subscription.

Simon Owens

Yes, sounds good!

Sophia

Thinking of some bts vlogs that would showcase our process and the team - someting like that?

Johnny Harris

great idea!

Johnny Harris

We're working on translating now! :)

Johnny Harris

Behind the scenes. Show us how you make the videos.

Stuart Shaffer

I would love to get to know your team. What does Tom Fox look like? Who are the other people working closely with you? Short introduction videos would be nice!

Sophia

To flesh out @Babak's suggestion, if you made a post here every time you uploaded a video, we'd have a place to comment on it. Easy peasy.

Peter Sturdee

I'll second the long form content idea! Especially the long un(or lightly)edited interviews.

Craig Albert

A Q&A podcast. You take a few questions and shoot from the hip and answer them. Easy to produce and you already have an outline for content. I’d be interested in your your thought process on life, work and creativity as well as where you’re headed.

Andrew Dawson

Also, translating ur videos and Bright Trip courses to Arabic will expand ur audience as well

Ezat

Great 👏🏽 But answering the DM very important too. I’ve send a message two months ago with an idea but i didn’t get any answer.

Ezat

Screen shares of the animation process in Adobe After Effects. Like you did when you launched this patreon.

Maxim Horssels

Interesting! I'll think on this, thanks for sharing

Johnny Harris

Personally, I would like to see some sort of Q&A here, for example, we can suggest some topics or give you feedback/criticize things that we see in your reports, personally I gave up writing comments on youtube because it's like a black hole and 99% it won't be seen by the person that I wanted, so it would be great to use this platform in a way that I/we can share our honest feedback after a video/report is released

Babak

Yes. There are sometimes only snippets of interviews in the videos, but one can hear the expertise of your partner and would like to learn more of them. Edit: Uploading uncut interviews wouldn't be so much extra work for you and we could benefit from it a lot👍

Matthias

Ah interesting - would extended interviews be along those lines?

Johnny Harris

I'd like to see further investigations or information which may got cut out of the episodes for the sake of the length of the video

Matthias
