Queen Takes Pawn
Added 2021-08-17 20:13:45 +0000 UTCI was tagged in a post featuring a ball hood and that set me pondering how I might do something interesting featuring them.
It made me think of pawns in a game of chess, and so I took a swing at designing some appropriate costumes.
I originally sketched the queen as being in full heavy rubber with a respirator but then decided to try a version exposing her face.
While I like the version without the mask, I felt the one where you could only see her eyes made a much, much tougher statement, so decided to publish that one as the 'definitive' take.
A couple of interesting side-notes on this one was creating essentially a black-and-white scene but getting some colour into it (when you study even the most minimalist latex photography there's more often than not more colour in those reflections than you think). The other challenge was balancing the details in this piece so that it was possible to read all of the individual figures in the scene without it turning into a cluttered black and white mess - I enjoyed putting all of the individual straps, d-rings and other details into the outfits but knew that I couldn't let them override the intent for the whole piece.
I think I managed to pull it off...
