The Colony - Sketch & Flats

Ever think you may have bitten off more than you can chew?

The concept on this one was simple, the perspective...well eye-crossingly fiddly.

Glad to be this side of the process and ready to paint...

Transference

For this piece, the idea came from the notion of building an outfit made of rubber breath bags and then connecting another to them.  Working through the idea and the desire to be able to clearly see the connections between the participants lead me to place the characters facing forwards with the foreground character seated...which ultimately lead me to the composition and scenario we have here.

Transference - Process

Fortunately I had a clear weekend, this weekend, so I was able to throw myself wholeheartedly into this piece.

Working background to foreground, our nurse and then the patients.

Quickly realised green was a better colour for the wheelchair pads and decided to throw in the purple kicker light into the background to add a little more contrast.

Partway through I realised the nurse needed a little extra headgear or something to complement the simplicity of her cowl so painted in...

Playing around with masks and tubes - I don't quite know where these subjects are heading but it looks like they're having an interesting time in transit...

Moloko Fantasia - Process

The challenge for this piece was that I wanted the scene to appear strongly lit from below. So as usual I decided to paint the surroundings first before turning my attention to the characters in the scene.

Because I knew this would be a challenge, I started from the foreground bar and then worked backwards trying to pay as much attention as I could to the light direction and upward cast shadows.

From there I decided to keep the enslaved figures above the bar shiny and white (a nod...

A little late this week, I'm afraid. A super busy weekend and then for some reason or other I seemed to make quite a meal of sketching up this scene.

I had a thought about the Korova Milk Bar from the movie A Clockwork Orange (it's a masterpiece of production design - look it up) and riffed on that...

Five O - Process

So despite a hectic week (and a super busy weekend ahead), all that work setting up those many layers made painting so much easier.

As ever, start with the background and build up, and everything went to plan, except for the moment when I realised I'd set the base colours of the restraints and the rubber pads to be the wrong way around and quickly had to flip things.

Well, here's the sketch for painting #50 of this project - looking back on the previous 49 paintings, I wanted to do something quintessentially 'phetishskin' playing around with funky restraints, floors, ceilings and lots and lots of tubes...

Machina Deam

I guess this technically is my first science fiction work, or piece that could be considered science fiction. Most of my paintings take place in a semi-technological space full of weird and incomprehensible machines that just 'do stuff', which could make them work as sci fi, as much as with the right budget, most could be realised in the real world.

That is to say that I don't think I'll be heading into the world of robots and spaceships any time soon, but this has been an interesting a...

Machina Deam - Process

Interesting one this one - wasn't sure how to attack it at first from a colour standpoint, so I decided to go in with greys and paint anything where I absolutely knew what the colour had to be.  Then, as you'll see in the final piece, I laid in just enough colour/lighting into the scene as to what felt right for me.

Okay, so that's the painting split up into 35 separate layers (all named and organised into folders for efficiency!)

Time to start painting proper (and turn that green foot and other weird coloured items into what they should really look like...)

So, here's a sketch...

Dipping into a bit of a Hajime Sorayama tribute here (if you don't know his work, do yourself a favour and Google his sexy robots - big, big fan, back in the '80s - all his stuff done with old school airbrushes long before we had Photoshop.)

As to the origin of this particular image - well, it's an image that came into my head after two incidents involving my wife - first, a dream in which she was wearing the exact nurse's outfit in the sketch, and then the ...

Matriarch

This image emerged during a meditation and the details practically drew themselves when I started to sketch.

I'm pleased with the composition of this scene, simple, but I think, effective.  Although, as you probably know from my paintings - I always have to roll the "camera" off axis and as much symmetry as I have in the scene, I like to break things up from being perfectly mirrored.

Matriarch - Process

This turned out to be a really straightforward and fast piece to paint up. Biggest conundrum to solve on this one was I knew that the Matriarch's outfit had some red in it, but wasn't quite sure where. Quite pleased with how it turned out - fun getting the radiosity (reflected red light from the Matriarch's dress) cast in the scene. 

Partway through this, realised that she has the same headpiece, virtually, as the Inseminatrix (my last painting), so will consciously change tack on ...

Only three versions of this one - the first one more sticky than the others, and the last featuring a little bit of censorship and removal of anything penetrating to keep the prudes on Instagram happy...

With this one, I think I'm not going to question it too much. I just know that while I was meditating, she bubbled up from my unconscious with this outfit, apparatus, sickly green lighting and whatever the heck's going on in the background there...

Apologies for the late posting this week - we had a short vacation over the Easter weekend that was really enjoyable but meant I didn't get much time to draw for a few days. I feel like I've hit a generally sustainable schedule and want to get back onto it as it keeps me consistently painting and hopefully provides you generous folks with a regular feed of updates and images.

Well, as you can see from this one, I went with one plan for the background and gradually, over the course of the painting made a course correction.

I'd originally aimed for baby blues in the background to contrast with the pinks in the foreground but the more I painted our patient and her voluminous bundles of pink latex the more I realised I wanted to make everything softer and pinker. The original inspiration for the painting was a desire to make something cuddly, voluminous and pink...

Blasted through the flats layering over coffee this morning. Back-and-forth over whether to paint this as yellowy, natural latex or vivid pinks. Decided to go pink, as I haven't done anything like this yet.

A little late this week with the upload - I had an art piece to paint IRL early in the week and spent this weekend vacationing - which meant a lot of drawing in coffee shops (strategically positioned in a corner so I could draw without causing a fuss.)

As to what prompted this one - first a desire to stick to something a bit simpler and more straightforward than 'The Preparation' from a few weeks back, and secondly, I just had the desire to draw something soft, flouncy, p...

The Embrace

Not much to say in detail about this one - I just had the idea of the pose between the two main characters and then, once I'd worked that out, realised I could expand the scene by adding the two handmaidens.  And then, it just felt right to include a crowd watching whatever is going on.

Working out where the tubes coil and what connects to what took a few attempts to get right, with the final tubes being added at the very end of the painting when it felt the main participants' mask...

The Embrace - Process

This one came together quite enjoyably and smoothly - a nice step away from the complexity of the last piece!

Decided to keep things simple this week after the complexity of the last piece. Had an idea about draw a low-angle fetish/bondage embrace between two characters so decided to go for it.

And then, as is typical, the scene got more complex with additional characters...and then a crowd...

Dunno where it's set, what it means, but...hey!

I always imagine this painting fitting somewhere at the end of a sequence that begins with my Aqua & Ocea piece, moves onto The Dressing Room, with Escort to Hedone leading into this...
