That's indeed a classic scenario, have seen lots of art with similar concepts, but not many tales. It seems that usually works with a male poacher becoming a female kitty, maybe the way to give it a fresh twist could be using a female poacher? Maybe she kills a male lion and the lionesses turn her into a proper replacement? The ironic ending being that as lion she becomes fat and lazy, letting the lionesses do all the work, becoming less dangerous that she was as woman. XP The idea of using a group of poachers also has potential.

How about a good old fashioned retribution tale? A poacher with no respect for animal life is punished for killing a pregnant snow leopard by being transformed into one and becoming the male’s new mate. Fun thing about big cats is they can go at it for days! Plenty of time for him to become resigned to his fate by the end. Same idea would work with a lion pride, perhaps even a whole group of poachers involved
