Update + venting

This week, I should have 2 vids coming out. Cardboard console and more blender. All fun stuff, but the real reason I'm posting today is to rant and rave about how I've been living a lie for a month now.

I edit videos with multiple 4K camera angles, and as you can imagine, my editing program struggles to keep up when I'm chopping away at it. I've become very fast with key binds and using premiere in general has allowed me to edit in one day, what would have taken me a week in Vegas years ago. To make editing smoother, I use proxies, a low-quality version of my footage. All the editing is done to these smaller files, and then when I render to the video, it applies all my edits to my full 4K footage and then it all gets shipped out.

For a while now, I've had to make sure I get recording finished before I go to bed to edit the next morning, because proxies do take time to render, and rendering them overnight is critical so I can work on them the next day. Last night I was up till 5:30am (I know I'm such a martyr) so I could edit by the next morning. I wake up 8 hours later to find the proxies not even halfway done. For those who care, its about 500GB of 4K footage being scaled down to like 480p. For months now, this process has been taking sometimes 48 hours, making it much harder to keep on a good upload schedule. Having a full day of not being able to work, and having to focus on other project in the meantime can be a bit annoying. I chalked it up to making longer videos with bigger footage, but it turns out Premiere is just secretly evil.

Today, I randomly notice my CPU was maxed out at 100% workload while the proxies are rendering, and seeing as Premiere says its using my graphics card to render, I decided to look into it. After changing some secret, hard to find settings in Nvidia control panel, I FORCE Premiere Pro to use my GPU, and found that it surely was never using the GPU at all. My once 48 hour render times are now reduced to maybe 5 hours :) I can't decide if I should leap for joy or leap into a blender. I'll just be happy I figured that out.

"Wow, pefer, thats a crazy story for the day thanks for shar" OH BUT THATS NOT ALL >:| Sit and listen because its even more evil than that.

About a month ago, Premiere released a new update fixing UI glitches when using the masking tool that made it almost impossible to use (if you know, you know) The update also fixed and added some other stuff but I digress.

I was very exited about this update, but after installing it and trying out the feature, I found that it changed absolutely nothing. I just passed it off as me not understanding the change and moved on. Well, today I found out that I've been using the same 2021 version of Premiere for 2 years because even though it updates, it DOESN'T update your desktop icon to open the new version. Wow.

In short, my whole life is now looking up. I do plan on doing 2 videos a week on average if possible. I can edit fast, it's just always been a hardware issue preventing me from moving as fast as Id like. After some reflection, all these issues might be boiled down to me not paying enough attention, but actually no. Premiere pro is just evil. I love it though. Ok you can go now. Frick.

Bro. This is why I hate computers. Their programs and stuff are so hard to keep up with, even if you try, that it is so easy to get lost. I'm sorry for your suffering but I'm glad that you are getting stuff figured out. Hopefully stuff goes a lot smoother now
