In the world of Fuzzbutts, most obligate carnivores/omnivores get their foodstuffs in the form of dubious protein slurries reconstituted into ultra-processed commercially available kibbles and pâtés. These products typically derive their protein from cheap sources like beans, soy, insects, and/or fish byproducts- and are then flavored with additives and sodium to create an artificial “meaty” taste. These products, unhealthy though they are, are immensely popular with the general public. Real meat- grown in labs from donor animal cells- does exist in FB, but it’s expensive, and the consumption of it remains the subject of decades of social controversy.

The trusty Fishcuit™, however, is everycritter’s unproblematic fav. Despite the name, the Fishcuit Original™ contains no actual fish protein, and is instead a cheese-flavored savory treat. The outside is chewy, while the inside is fluffy and bready, not unlike a cheddar bay biscuit. Beloved by all, but especially feline folk, the Fishcuit™ is one of the oldest and best-selling snack products in the world, even enjoyed by herbivores. Cravin’ delicious? Try a Fishcuit!™ 🧡 Now available in Pizza™, Pretzel™, Flamin’ Hot™, Vanilla™, Tuna™, Salmon™, and Meat*™!

This is actually the subject of much debate and speculation in the scientific world. It's known that the furry folk of FB evolved the same way humans did, descending from primative ancestors that came to walk upright with a bipedal gait, freeing up their hands to better manipulate their environment and use tools. These early ancestors would've had a level of intelligence on par with real-world apes. Early carnivores are thought to have perhaps hunted and eaten the meat of their herbivorous counterparts. This is speculated to have kicked off an evolutionary arms race, with herbivores evolving increased intelligence/bigger brains to better combat the predators that stalked the herd. As intelligence grew, so did animals' capacity for planning, empathy, art, and most importantly, communication. With the advent of language, the wall between carnivore and herbivore was bridged, and civilization as we knew it began to take form. The development of agriculture birthed the development of trade, and a sort of mutualism formed between the species, with predators (in theory, anyway) coming to fill the role of protectors of prey, in exchange for access to eggs, milk, and of course companionship. The bulk of their diet came from fish and insects. Nowadays, while all carnivores do need some amount of protein to stay healthy, much of the modern carnivore's calorific intake is derived from ultra-processed carbs (eg.poptarts). Fuzzfolk are long past the need to eat meat, which is why many view the willful consumption of lab-grown meat to be frivolous and extremely ethically disturbing. And yet, the meat industry has never reported higher profits... Of course, all this evolution talk is ultimately just speculation. If Mimi is to be believed, all animals existed in a primal, brainless state of endless predation- until a fantastical alien race known as "hoomans" somehow bestowed sentience to every species, as well as an ideological objection to eating the flesh of their brethren.

How did Carnivores eat before the invention of modern food technology? (aka lab-grown foods, artificial foods, that sort of thing). I’m sure they had access to various natural proteins like seafood, insects, lentils, yeast, beans, etc. But what about red meat, or other meats excluding seafood? How that was traditionally obtained?

Offensively smelly foods are often banned in public spaces, yet usually beloved by a select few- one can open up a can of surströmming to insta-summon every hungry meowing cat within a 5 mile radius. Blood is also a restricted food item in FB, due to the potential health issues than can come from a consumer ingesting improperly stored or harvested blood. Unlike eggs or milk, blood is illegal to sell independently, and can only be purchased through a special license (usually only provided to sanguinous species, like vampire bats). Any potential blood-adjacent biohazard items are similarly banned, such as fresh antler velvet. This doesn't stop said items, and even blood, from being illegally sold, traded, and gifted freely. Some herbivores feel it's less wasteful to gift their bloody strips of velvet to a carnivore friend to devour, rather than discard it as trash.

Over millennia of evolution, most of the population have developed a resistance to foods that would poison irl animals. This doesn't always mean they can eat them with zero side effects- many people react to these foods the same way many humans react to dairy. Bloating, nausea, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Yet similarly to how many lactose-intolerant humans still willfully consume cheese and ice cream, many animals with dietary intolerances still willfully consume their yummy food of choice, and opt to deal with gastric suffering later. Sunny pukes if he eats more than a few ounces of chocolate, yet Skye often has to physically pry tubs of chocolate ice cream out of his greedy paws.

So does this mean cats and other animals developed a tolerance for typically-toxic foods like onion and garlic. Or coffee. Or chocolate

Prissy! It's good to see our favorite wrinkly baby again! I do love little details like this, it makes the world feel so lived in. I'm wondering - we have the sociopolitical discourse on real meat, do we have any weird cultural foods? Or foods that have straight up been banned?
