Growing and managing a giant church takes a ton of work, and on top of that he had to support both his first family with Eleanor, then his second with Maple. Merry has an unhealthy workhorse mindset combined with absolutely relentless ambition (he is incable of ever feeling satisfied). Guy hasn't had a day off in...decades. Not since Toffee and Topher were little kids. Which very much factored into how roughly he aged, and is also why he's so damn bitter and cranky in his old age. Merry is tired, but too stubborn to admit he needs rest. He's tired and sleep-deprived and his joints constantly ache and he's ALWAYS busy. He's too busy to even realize how completely miserable he really is.

And the reason why Merry could never find them was because they changed their name so nobody from their past could track them down and ik that's probably Not what happened but it was so vivid that I had to read back through the comments to make sure it was a dream. I'm undecided on how it'll be, at first I wanted him to survive a devastating illness, only to then die abruptly in tragically mundane kinda way, no fanfare, no struggle. But now I'm wondering if I'm entirely committed to Merry dying alone and miserable. A full redemption is not very reasonable, buuuut I don't think it's impossible that Merry couldn't manage to partly mend a few broken bonds with the ticking clock of death being his key motivator. He’s a good singer on his own, but is completely outclassed by Eleanor, whose powerful gospel numbers are semi-responsible for drawing so many members to his church. With his own kids, Merry partly wanted them to have a skill he could show off, and partly wanted to give them the creative outlet he never had. He’s pretty annoyed when Toffee wishes to sing choir instead of play piano (choir is cute for a boy, but not very manly or dignified for an adult to do, in Merry’s mind) and feels completely disrespected when Topher starts skipping violin lessons to learn guitar instead.

Merry's mom snuck away in the middle of the night night when Merry was 3 or 4, he has little memory of her. He tried looking her up when he became an adult, but she is either dead, missing, or doesn't want to be found.

They already look like their old man. ;3 Toffee especially snickers at Topher whenever he has to hold up his phone and squint to read it (and for a second becomes the spitting image of their father), while Topher makes fun of Toffee for unthinkingly using Merry's silly kid-friendly swears ("oh, dagnabbit", ) and how Toffee's speech pattern gets significantly more southern (and thus significantly more Merry-like) when he's annoyed. Toffee is normally very gentle and soft-spoken, but when he's mad (or excited) he sounds EXACTLY like Merry.

And in those moments, when he still cannot bear the painful vulnerability required to make amends with his children, he will lie in his hospital bed and think about how despite everything, he ended up alone and unloved, just like his father did. His father was a bitter and sadistic man, seeming to delight in finding excuses to humiliate and punish his son. Merry ran away from home a lot as a kid. As an adult, Merry walks with a permanent limp and will later require a cane, and this is because of a particularly brutal assault by his father when he was a teenager, a drunken retaliation for Merry "mouthing off". So to Merry, there can be no comparison between him and his dad. Merry is a perfect gentleman to Eleanor, and a present and supportive father to his two children. He works himself to the bone to give them everything he never had. A happy home with lots of books and toys, parents that love each other, picnics and movies and library trips, piano lessons for Toffee, violin lessons for Topher, holiday cards and hugs and plenty of playtime. Life was idyllic for the Meadowsweets. And then Merry's local little church started growing.

He attends a church service on a whim as a young adult and is blown away by the music and warmth and community it offers. He immediately sets his mind to becoming a pastor so he can offer these things to people who need them. And also because becoming a church leader promises a lot of control and unquestionable authority, and to Merry, due to his shitty upbringing, there is no greater form of love than control.

Instead it was characterized by poverty, growing up hungry and neglected under the wrathful, unpredictable eye of his alcoholic father. Like I remember seeing my dad pictures in his 20s and I was like: Oooohh so that's why people thought you were gay daddy 🤣 Context my dad was always a quiet very polite soft spoken introvert soul, he was an excellent cook, could do all house shores, and have a very pastel sence of fashion (a lot of shades of pink, blue and yellow mix with tight jeans) and since he wasn't a misogynists womanizer like many of that time ( and that he actually treated woman with respect, as people without wanting something) many people were SO sure ladies weren't his taste, kinda sad actually, he was an oddity, which was kinda hypocrite from other men, they dress just as colorful but because they act macho-like and were sexist jerk nobody told them shit. But I think that the fact that he was a pretty boy with good prospects, that "oh any parent would be so proud of having him as their child" and that many girls/families in his neighborhood wanted him as their husband/son in law didn't help with his male friendships 😅

It will happen to Toffee too someday, you can see Toffee’s got less fluff on his head in present day FB (in his 40s) than he did in his 20s.
